What are you doing today, II

I was supposed to be spending the night into tomorrow afternoon with Ty, Felicia and my Grandbabies, but their "Mother" stepped in and said no, she doesn't want them out in this weather.
What weather?
It's not bad, it's NOT snowing.
So I've been pissed off because they've been crying wanting to see me/Nana.
So they are at home right now crying for me with their Mother, and I'm avoiding the drama that my son's ex always throws into any situation.
It might be a good reminder to her that the kids will remember this when they get older and possibly turn their backs on her. She would regret that!

I made a crock pot of ham and bean soup.
It's delicious, reminds me of my Grandma's ❤️
Very warming and comforting 😊

No fart jokes, please..
My Gramps used to say , I love this but you know, it's going to cause me to make some noise..😄

Here's to you Grams!

My mother was exquisite at absolutely ruining a good bean soup. Therefore I never had a hankering for it.

After learning to cook from a 3 star chef, I made my own, It was palatable. Recipes for bean soup are relatively simple.

I have occasionally had some that was excellent. Made simply, and by someone who knows what not to do. And wondered how hard one has to try to mess it up.

Been dealing with arthritis pain for a couple weeks.

Took an injection on Tuesday and hoped it would have helped.

Took methotrexate this morning. About 1pm I took Tramadol (mild opioid) pain killer. 3pm took "Hydrocodone 10". I'm still in pain. And now I'm dizzy.

Been going back and forth with the doctor for several days. He is looking to change my injections from Cymzia to Enbrel. I was turned down by insurance for Enbrel about 2 years ago. Very likely it could be approved this time. Insurance typically wants to exhaust cheaper meds before jumping up to more expensive meds. I used Humira for several years until it failed. Switched to Cymzia and now that is failing.

If I get Enbrel it will probably start in late February or maybe March? I need to take a bunch of tests for the doctor next week. Then wait for the results. The way I feel today I really hope they are not IQ or sobriety tests.

Francis, this is the recipe I used.
Only thing I didn't add was the salt, because my chicken broth wasn't low sodium.
I used what was left of the ham I had at Christmas.
That was a spiral ham which has been glazed, so plenty of sodium and flavour from that.

I'm also not a fan of ham/pork bean soup. Never have been. I'm not opposed to other types of bean soup, some of the Italian bean soups are darn tasty. I like ham too . . . a lot.

I'llgive her a try.
Now all I have to do is convince my 6 year old Maddie to eat it.
She is strictly Mac & Cheese with a hot dog.

I was scraping snow yesterday with the tractor nothing else physically except. I had to write a check for our new to us Suburban and I'm not use to wrighting a check that large o_O mabe that was it

Decided on 2.5hrs of watching boring 😴 training videos required for me to continue being a scout leader.
Yea they moved Youth Protection to annually here:(

I’m afraid that sooner or later its going to drive more scouters away.

The program has changed from when I was a scout (70’s) and even a leader in 2000’s

And we are loosing scouts too troops are closing up.

Same here. I'm told that there used to be around 65 different scout troops in this area alone. Now there's 4 soon to be 3. I just had to watch 2.5 hrs of risk management and abuse reporting along with all the lgbtqrpxjse+ stuff.

I have to go though all the same stuff for being a fencing coach.

Different modules each year.

Each module is typically good for 2 or 3 years.

So we are on a rotation, and there are background checks too.

Every year they seem to add more layers, this year they added fencing skills training. Which I am fine with, I'd like to learn. But they required we learn all 3 weapons and wheelchair fencing. I'm a Saber coach. I don't coach Epee. I don't coach Foil. We have stairs and no ability to do wheelchair fencing. But I had to take modules on those other things, and then take a test. The worst part is the test was NOT graded. So I could have literally hit play and walked away, then copied recipes from the JOY OF COOKING onto the test as my answers. I was a little pissed about that!

It's finally warming up so I was able to enjoy 20 minutes of pain relief this morning. Today is going to be another day of sitting on my butt as sharp burning back pain is causing loss of feeling and strength in my legs.

The Greenhouse is heating the main house this afternoon. Sun is shining for a while yet. Still, despite the thermometer on the wall suggesting it is 70%F inside, the main house seems cold.

30% F outside so I will attempt to fill the bird feeders.

I think our bird sanctuary is supporting over 300 birds.
Buggers sure are hungry.

Do you have a humidifier?
If you are asking me, yes I do. Whole house humidifier attached to the furnace. Added to that is am 18' X 6 ' X 16' high greenhouse that pumps gallons into the air from the plants. I also have an aquatic garden plus several large trees inside the house.
An 8 ft Banana tree.
A 12 ft Avocado tree.
A 6 ft Fiddleleaf Croton.
Several Plantation palms.
A 10 ft Compound Hibiscus.

Occasionally one can hear the monkeys chatter as they swing thru the forest.

That said, When it is really cold, I keep a pot of water steaming on the stove.

One other trick I pull is to always shower with the tub plug closed. I leave the hot water in the tub until it cools to room temperature. It adds moisture to the house and recovers some heat that otherwise went down the drain.

Cutting some wood the other day on the only side of the property I haven't cleared yet. Haven't spent much time over there and got into some poison oak, and was wearing short sleeves. Been a long time since I have been that dumb, I noticed the vine on the tree but there were no leaves, pulled the vines off with the chainsaw and a stick thinking I was good to go, I should have never thought that. right arm from wrist to passed the elbow got it good.

Ouch!

I feel for you!

Pretty sure my property was used, by a past owner, as a garden for poison ivy. No poison oak here. But if you need any poison ivy I have more than my share. I've learning how to pull it with my bare hands and, as long as I scrub up my exposed skin, I don't get it. Sometime I find I'm not paying attention and stumble into patches of it. You need to wash off poison ivy the way you wash off heavy grease. It takes a good soap, I like using Dawn Dish Soap, and I lather it on heavy, usually washing twice.

I have to assume that poison oak is similar in its toxins to the skin and can be washed off similarly?

Yep, same active ingredient. Haven't had it since I was a kid. Although I saw it on another tree by the garden last year and was able to get rid of it. The stuff here is a vine that climbs the trees.

Day 4 of barely being able to stand. I did it long enough to drag my sore butt outside to brush snow off the truck to drive our oldest daughter to her school program. She's in a specialized high school doing booklets at home and going to classroom sessions 3 days a week for teacher assistance.

Finished yesterday by leaving the Purdue University campus just before midnight to make the 90 minute drive home.

Got fuel on my way home for $2.75/gallon, which is .25-35/cents a gallon cheaper than the local stations. I have 3 stations that I tend to frequent on my way home. Check the prices on my way down, fill up on my way back. All 3 are in the county south of where I live, and I live close to the south end of my county, for whatever reason, the prices on gas/diesel are usually substantially lower down there.

Despite getting home late last night (early this morning?) I was still up at 5:30am this morning.

I visit the surgeon this morning to have him check the progress on my foot. I don't know what he is going to say, but it barely hurts, I have actually been giving fencing lessons while wearing my surgical walking boot. Obviously not advanced lessons!!! I'm not moving up and down the fencing strip too much; but I can lunge! The foot seems to be healing well. Swelling is 90% gone. Scar is nicely healed. Foot looks normal again. I can hobble around without the boot, but I'm not yet "flexing" it while bearing weight.

Today is the lovely Mrs_Bob's birthday. Her brother & sis-in-law flew into town. We will probably go out to dinner. Presents at home . . . and a Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake for dessert.

I have it, whatever IT is.
Blahhh.
🤧
My "100 day" post covid cough subsided a bit, but my nose is now running.
