What are you doing today, II

Got a call today for interview for winter temp with PennDOT driving snow plow I'm assuming they asked if I could drive stick shift time will tell.
In previous years I delivered propane but my back didn't like humping 150' of hose out to fill the tanks so I bailed on that.
I don't like sitting around in the winter I cant work out side so this will occupy my time.

Went to a city council meeting this evening. At the end of the meetings, citizens can go to the microphone if they have something to bring up. I went to the microphone and told them what I was doing to bring women veterans together so they can develope comraderies among themselves. I told them about the lady who runs the Clay County Dept. of Veteran Affairs and that I suggested she get women veterans together. She likes the idea and is following through with it. I suggested everyone listening to the meeting there and via internet that if they know any women veterans, they should go have a chat with the lady who runs the Clay County Dept. of Veteran Affairs. It went over pretty well. Hopefully it brings out a lot of women veterans because they have been ignored for way too long.

Greenhouse power went out this morning. I know this because my computer is on the same circuit.

The problem was the Ground-fault kept going off. I disconnected every device, and it still interrupted the power.
The problem was a space heater had overwhelmed a duplex outlet. No real surprise and an easy fix but,,,,,;plugged into a moresecure receptacle, my computer would not reboot. Crumpy tried for 30 minutes. Nothing.

We have a bunch of units in the attic leftover from our closed company. However, neither Crumpy nor I was looking forward to setting one up again. I suggested we not worry today. I'll get one down sometime today whilst she was at work.

An hour later I sat down at my desk and out of habit hit the start button. Computer came right up. Okay!

So, now that's over, But, why am I burning up 20 amp standard receptacles?

It happens every time I plug in an oil style radiant space heater. Not right away but over time. They only draw 12 amps to start. Six once they achieve top heat. But the positive side of the plug melts and begins to arc.

The line comes into the duplex on one hot side screw, and out on the other. The breach happens there, maybe between the two screws. IDN.
Is my computer system drawing that much power?

Loose connection creating a high amp draw.
Check the prongs on the plug. It's the plug getting hot? The wire? Or just at the duplex.

All of the above.

But I think you may have spotted it with the plug itself. First, it seems small for the application to me.
Thanks!

When I plugged it into a fresh outlet, the electronic control went spastic. So,,,; I threw the unit away.

I prefer the old-style mechanical rotary thermostat units because if power is interrupted, they do not require one to restart them. One can still find them at Rural King. It is what I have at the Hippie Ridge buildings because rural power is unreliable.

I picked up a plow for the sxs for half the price of a new one. Only used three times. It pushes ok. Right now the snow we have is rock hard from rain and melt now colder slightly. The plow was already assembled and came with all the universal mounting pieces which took a while to sort out exactly where to mount it. After an hour of selective vocabulary in the garage yesterday, I started fresh again today and figured it out in minutes.
Here's the mounting bracket which can be assembled in many different ways depending on the machine.

I could use that in my suburban driveway, would take 2 minutes.

I'm setting up an Olympic style Epee training clinic for my Epee fencers that will take place in early January. My friend Marek, and actual Olympian, and World Cup Medalist, will be the clinic leader, 4 hours of intensive training for my students.

Marek was the head coach at Cambridge University in England, then was the coach at University of Notre Dame, and now he hangs out with the likes of me :yum:

OKAY, put in a new 20 Amp receptacle. Cleaned the original wires back to good copper and got it all back together.

Something I always do is wrap the receptacle with black tape. This to keep screws from turning but really so I can work with them without shorting to the metal box. It occurs to me that the tape is an insulator and therefore reduces the ability for any of the heat to dissipate. Since this box wiring carries on to the computer array it is under a full load much of the time.

So, no more portable heaters in use there. Just a plug in Airwick (tm) perfume. Needed because the Greenhouse also houses the cat litter box.

I went on my interview for the department of transportation thursday
I had to do a driving test on 8 speed fuller transmission in their dump truck
So go to pull out I push the clutch to the floor (should have engaged transmission brake) it wouldn't go in to gear without grinding)
so I get driving around their yard trying to remaster double clutching and struck out after about 10 around their yard the guy said I needed more practice and we were done with the test. I haven't driven that style of manual transmission for 40 years so I didn't pass :(

I'd have failed that one too.

When I owned a fleet of medium duty trucks I switched over to heavy duty Allison automatic transmissions because it made it easier to promote from within the company than to hire drivers from outside the firm.

Do you have to double clutch for the test? When I went for my class 1 probably 25 years ago we were supposed to double clutch on the test. When I got in I told the instructor I never use the clutch and he said that was fine, just do what I’m used to. The synchro mesh transmissions shift so smooth, double clutching just makes it harder to shift. Better luck next time 👍

The outlaws.....er.....inlaws are here for a week. We're having dinner tonight with my wife's sister and her family tonight. They're an interesting bunch. They live in the city near us but we only see them a few times a year. Close your eyes and remember the movie "National lampoons Christmas vacation". Now picture cousin eddy. That's my brother in law to a T. It's Monday and I was trying to convince my wife that I have scouts tonight so I could sneak out right after dinner. My father asked if he could come too. 🤣

I always had to double clutch them until I got a feel for the engine speed and road speed then just speed shifted most of the time but that was 40 years ago I admitted to 3 guys doing the interview before driving I'd be rusty.

I’d highly recommend not double clutching, that’s actually working against how the synchronizers are designed. I’m not trying to tell you how to drive a truck, I know you obviously know how. A lot has changed in transmissions in that time. Using the clutch just complicates shifting, with no clutch you are literally from one gear to the next within a second and when you get on to it it’ll be as smooth as an automatic. Most of my driving experience has been in construction and farming, in soft ground it’s impossible to double clutch as you would be stopped before you hit the next gear. When hauling grain off the field, I have to use the engine brakes to get the engine to slow down fast enough to get to the next gear, so definitely don’t have time for double clutching.

Went to Defiance to spend what little time I could with my little Granddaughters.
I had planned to take Maddie and Elaina to eat at Applebee's, but their worthless "Mother" said no, so I gave them their Christmas presents and gift cards then hugged them goodbye.
My son Ty is constantly towing now and on call because his wife Felicia is off work from her management position at Ollie's.
I've been helping them get through the rough times right now.
I won't get to spend any quality "Nana time" with them until after their school break is over, again.. because their Mother is an idiot and forgets those years I lived with them and practically raised them while she slept all day.
Jeff is leaving tonight to go to State College to have Christmas with my oldest Granddaughter Kasey.
I'll be working Christmas night, 3rd shift 10p-6a.
Yahoo..

I survived a family dinner with my wife's sisters family yesterday. It's one of those "grin and bare it" scenarios that I have to endure a couple times a year. He's a lifer at Walmart and she works at a coffee shop. We don't actually have much happening today.

Growing up, my mom's side of the family always had a big family dinner Christmas eve as my grandmother was pure French and the French tradition is to celebrate Christmas eve. We're having a dinner tomorrow night with my in laws, my wife's former inlaws (They like and have seen me more than their own son this year. He's also a lifer at Walmart), and some friends of ours.
