1973 Tucker Sno Cat 1443 New to Me

Hold that thought….

Final hop. Time to bring the LR track back to a full compliment of 31 grousers and start the arduous task of adjusting everything else back to specs. Last year a fan in the woods was required to get anything done. This year a boat (and a shit-ton of bug spray).

Thanks to PP, 1BG and TA for connecting the dots to make it happen!

In position to take the tracks off and roll the front carrier out. Few thrust bushings to address. Painting the carrier and replacing idler were bearings.

Oil pan gasket rear main seal. Driveshaft paint

Few other items for the upcoming season!

Disassembly went smooth. Under an hour tracks off, tie rod off, drive shaft off, carrier rolled out, trunion carrier removed.

Oil drained. Need to add some more stands before I climb under it and get after the oil pan and rear main seal.

Cleaned up the parts to assess the situation.

Very happy with the wear on the rebuild few years ago. Learned a few things that will be addressed in version 2.0. Should be a quick fix.

I used hardend bronze on the thrust bushings taking up the wear on back of carrier. The cold and shock load causes one to shatter.

Will replace with regular bearing bronze. The one piece solid roller and stainless wear plate showing no signed after hundreds of miles.

Key is to get the front of the carrier journal flush with the carrier frame and then take up the slack with bronze bushings. Most wear is driving forward and on the back of carrier and trunion.

Adjusters came right out. Need to replace the adjusters.

Great night of prospecting for oil and better news. Rear main seal is not the leak! Wasn’t looking forward to the swap from down under.

Whats interesting about this leak is it’s only after running. After it sits leak stops. Not sure why I assumed rear main. But glad we are eliminating that.

I have confirmed leaking oil pan gasket appears to be original and the oil pump gasket was leaking and bolts of various torque. Looks like someone has been in here before.

Internals looking good!

Oil pump will get new mounting gasket and resealing kit. Gears look great.

New Felpro pan gasket and assemble. This should be the bulk of the leak and can assess how bad the trans input is from there.

Front trunion bushing material here tomorrow. Should be fixed up ready for paint this weekend.

Took oil pump apart. Internals look like new. Will clean and reassemble.

Found an improved oring that reduces the pump cover leak point and and improved pump to block gasket. Both known leak points that have been addressed over time.

Note the custom oil pickup lowered and extended toward rear. Def of Tucker period quality and design. Cast fittings with plier marks.

Oil pump cleaned up and resealed. The new improved o ring is square and thicker less prone to collapse like the OE which isn’t available. Torqued 95 inch pounds.

New pump to block gasket is here. Design is thicker that OE. Looks like this was a leak contributor.

Oil pan cleaned degreased and getting paint.

Used a ball peen hammer on the gasket side of the pan to gently dimple the flange to counter any over torquing tightening in life.

Gasket was brittle and chipped into pieces. This was a leak point as well.

Gaskets all fitted up. Big fan of permatex high tack on the cork/paper gaskets to hold in place and maybe assist with anti leak.

Final wipe on the block and main side before install of pan. Little dab of permatex black where the cork meets the rubber before install.

Will bring everything up to room temp overnight and hopefully install pan tomorrow night.

Ho-Lee-Shit! That is crazy. Hiked up the Moose years ago and came down the Carriage Rd. to the old lodge. Similar design, but in rough shape. I heard that they were redoing it, and I assumed they meant the roof . . . not taking it to the ground and building new. But, then again, it is Dartmouth. That is beautiful! Is that where the kitten-less-cab came from?
