thyroid cancer diagnosis

Doc is doing well. Looks like 4-6 days in the hospital. Of course he's in for a long recovery period.

I have always been told average recovery time for anything requiring surgery is ONE week for each day in the hospital... and, make sure you do not try to resume regular activities before then or it will create a setback.

Ditto this.

Melen tried walking too much, too far after her surgery early this summer and ended up back in bed on ordered bed rest for a few extra weeks.

From what I understand the body/mind THINKS it can do what it cannot actually do. So you go out and do things and end up hurting yourself and consequently sliding backwards in your recovery.

Thanks all
I'm just out of 24 hr recvery unit and feeling great ... Course they shot me up with some pain meds. Morphine. I turned down the prior offer of morphine and that was a big mistake. I didn't feel any pain then but I've learned the day after surgery do not turn down pain meds. Duh.

Like Jerry said 3 way bypass. Sure glad it's done. Hope to be out of hospital by this weekend.

Glad to hear you're feeling great (or stoned...)!

Pain management will be important. Try to get the pain level constant. You don't want the ups and downs.

Slow Doc... take it REAL slow....

now get your mind out of the gutter! Take care, heal slowly and listen to the Doc.. not you, the other guy!

Doc realize that most pain meds work better if you take them BEFORE the pain gets really bad. The big mistake many people make is they try to tough out the pain and then when the pain gets really bad they take the meds. Don't be 'that guy' and make that mistake.

take a few to relax, doc. & yeah, being hesitant toward taking those meds is normal. take 'em if u have pains- they may get u that snooze a post-op guy ought get. glad ur procedure went well.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Fortunately I've never had one of those things. However, according to my dad who crashed his airplane and spent a month in the hospital last year (after I drove through fences and ditches just to go about a half mile through 7' tall corn to get him out of his airplane and to the ER), he seemed extremely happy to get his out. He's one of those guys like on the Monty Python comedy routines where a guy with a sword cuts his opponent's arm off and the opponent calmly states "Ah, nothing but a mere flesh wound". So him REALLY wanting that thing out tells me it must not be fun; especially after a bit of time with one.

Glad to read you are coming around well!!

I'm not sure if you people realize how much pain is inflicted on a man who laughs shortly after having his chest cracked open for open heart surgery. But all of this poking fun at a man who had his "pee-pee" violated in the worst imaginable way, is probably causing Doc some unnecessary pain.

Not sure that I'm speaking for the other moderators, but all I can say is KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. We are still waiting for our first paycheck from Doc!

I can joke about the "pee pee" pain because I've experienced it too first hand when the doc and nurse hauled about a 12" stint out of mine after I had my lithrotripsy.

I understand from a close friend of the family that it really hurts. Keep a stiff upper lip Doc. Get back here before these clowns totally mess up the place.

Doc,
Glad to see over at NTT that you've been up walking. Yes, walking to the other side of the room will whip your ass for a few days.
I've had the pee pee cath and it's no fun at all getting it ripped out. The two drain tubes in my chest didn't cause much discomfort at all, but that thing.........

Yes good to hear you are about to become mobile again Doc. I wish you the very best for a speedy recovery. We all do....

Best regards, Kirk

H ad a pee tube in for 6 weeks two years ago doc.....and was told all kinds of hore storyies about getting it out.....:whistling: when the nurse took it out was no pain at all............She was GORGAUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and after it was out she thumped it with her finger...and said ....There we took care of that little problem to!!!!!!!:w00t2:THAT HURT!!!!!!!!!!!!
