Hi all, I bought this machine last year running but in need of drive sprockets.It has an 18 hp air cooled 4 stroke electric start engine. 2 speed gear box with reverse and a Salisbury clutch system. 1st gear 8mph and 2nd gear 18mph around a 1000# payload and 1500# towing. They seem to be a well built all terrain vehicle I'm told was and still is used in the Canadian oil fields. You can still buy parts and they will even build you a new one if desired. I have enough replacement parts to keep it going for ever. I plan to keep it at the cabin in a container to play with up there also for emergency if something won't start or whatever. So far I have cleaned , painted and greased the under carriage parts. Polished the tub and painted the inside with bed liner. Now its time for re assembly. This is a project I work on between other projects like the work cabin. The tracks are 96" long and 17-1/2" wide X2 = 3360 sq. inches and the machine weighs 1500# that works out to .44 PSI dry. thats pretty good considering my Tucker is .68PSI the previous owner said he never had it in snow he mainly ran it off road in the desert and the Rubicon trail here in Ca. Now it will be a mountain cat not a desert rat. The tracks are in good shape as well as the grousers. I will post as I go. Marty

So today I put the new drive sprockets on the drive hubs. ( not fun ) they are about 1/16" small all the way around and have to be worked on. It reminded me of when I was a kid on the farm changing tires on and off rims with a bumper jack, a piece of flat bar and a hammer. they took about an hour each to slowly work them on the hubs. Also they are an inch wider than the old ones so I will have to get longer bolts. Marty

hey m1west, I also have a raid trac. she needs a new engine and im thinking about revamping the power unit with a hydrostatic drive. are tracks are different. il post some pics but I like yours a lot more, mine have plastic dogs that make with a aluminium sprocket and halve of them are busted.
Thanks, its a project I work on in between projects. I am in the middle of re powering a COOT right now. I'm getting caught up and will get back on the raidtrac after Christmas. as for hydrostatic I just ripped an arrangement like that out of the COOT. The problem is there is not enough variation of speed and torque. It would kind of work but wouldn't climb steep hills or go over walking speed. The 2 speed transmission with the Salisbury clutch works much better.

I also have a raid trac. I picked it up and it had been sitting for years maybe 10 - 20. Guy had it storage covered up. I got it running by changing up the starter and refreshing the fuel system. It has the 18 hp Tecumseh engine. Has a strong push blade, winch and light bar with original lights.
Now I have it sitting in storage. I’m thinking of selling it but not sure what to ask.
I was hoping to buy a Trapline here in northern Alberta Canada but now we may head back home to Manitoba. I have an acreage there I could use to push snow and for moose hunting but I want to see what I could get for it.
i suppose I’ll get what someone’s willing to pay but what were they priced at new?
this unit needs nothing. I may polish the tub and refresh the cowling with fresh paint and new led lights but it needs nothing. Even the track and wheels are great shape.
I sent Mark Fhyn an email. His shop is still open and he is the guy that built them in Calgary. No response yet.

The COOT project is about done, now that I have more time, I will soon be finishing this one also. I just received the red paint for the roof and engine cover to be repainted. After I get the paint on, its just nuts and bolts. I hope to finish this one in another month or so.
started digging the parts out, most of it is in the garage at the house, crappy picture but the panel on the right is the roof and the other is obviously the hood. These two pieces need to be prepped and painted and I have the paint, I'm going to try and get that done sometime this weekend depending on the prep. I don't have a lot of fabrication or modifications on this one so it should re assemble pretty quickly after the paint work is completed. I love 60's -70's toys. This one also uses a mechanical transmission and a Salisbury clutch, 2 forward gears neutral and reverse. top speed around 12-15 mph. I calculated the ground pressure at .68 psi which is in snowcat territory. I think I will leave this one on the mountain full time and park it in the container. it will be nice to have something up there that can get you off the hill in the winter if the track van develops a problem.
Today after the grind, I started the prep work for paint. Pulled the headlights out of the hood and a cooling fan.
Then started work on it, someone in the passed taped the raidtrac sticker off and re painted the hood, them or someone else removed the sticker with a screwdriver or something similar, there was sticker residue and gouges in the paint. After sanding with 100 grit I got the sticker residue off and old paint under it, most of the scratches sanded out and then gave it a couple coats of primer. Tomorrow I will sand it with 240 and am hoping the rest of the scratches come out, if they do I just need to color sand the rest of it and fix a couple small chips. I had started working on the roof a couple years ago, then got too busy with work. so like the COOT it was put away for another day, that day is now. I hope to finish the prep work tomorrow and paint it on Sunday.

Gotta love those Canadian Robertson screws and screwdrivers . Up here you usually end up with triples in your tool boxes of them , as the flats and philips wear out a lot faster

This morning after chores and putting the throttle cable on the COOT, I had time before lunch to finish the color sanding on the hood. Tomorrow I have a job walk that will take me out of the shop until after lunch. Im hoping I have enough time to clean up the hood and roof for paint and mask the areas that don't get painted. if I get that far I can paint on Wednesday. All the work is in the field right now and I have the shop to myself. Im taking advantage of that.

I hung up the roof and wiped it down with Acetone and was getting ready to do the same with the hood and tape off the black vents, I started looking at the piece of rubber molding around the top. Its not OEM and was added at some time for whatever reason. I thought that when the hood is freshly painted it would stand out like a sore thumb, so I took it off ( more Robertson head screws ) filled the holes, sanded and primed, tomorrow I will color sand that area wipe, tape and paint both pieces.

The best method I came up with is, I slightly sharpened an old bolt, drove it in with a hammer then drove the new bolt in from the other side until it knocked out the pointed bolt. I would be just fine not ever having to do that again, like changing a tire on a rim with a pry bar and a hammer, it works but not any fun. The good news is its done.

Decided to spray Berliner on the underside of the roof panel, it will take abuse loading things in and out and will be easy to touch up.
Assembled the hood, re installing the headlights, vent and an electric fan installed by the previous owner, he used the machine a lot on the Rybicon trail, desert and camping adventures. He said in the summer the engine would get hot, so I decided to leave it, the hood is already modified to fit it on and extra cooling at low speed can't hurt.
