Kitchen Reno

So here we are. November 1st. Done as far as we can go until the cupboard doors arrive which was supposed to be last week. 🤔

Our cabinet guy was here Monday installing the remaining lower inserts and finishing off the upper trim with caulk. He had an insert which contained a knife block for the lower cabinet beside the sink as well but it wasn't quite what we were looking for. So they're ordering in the right one. I can't do the backsplash and range hood until the doors are installed as I have to relocate the vent piping.

True. Actually, on the bright side, we were able to load the cupboards and visualize where things would be best located. Every day we're moving things around picturing where they'd be best suited.

For that knife block with the little plastic spike thingy's, can you get a spare set of the little plastic spikes? They're good but don't last forever.

originally introduced as the "Kapoosh" block - it has very mixed reviews.
knives make slivers on the plastic rods; the slivers block insertion; plastic rods bend into a cooked spaghetti formation....
recommendation: remove knives and rods and wash/dry monthly
replacement rods "not available"

the concept is neat. I've been tempted to build one using bamboo skewers - which one could cheaply just toss&replace 'as needed'

I'd more more than a little upset at the drawer construction - butt joints with screws into plywood . . . seriously?

Our remaining lower pull outs are in though the knife block isn't fully done yet.

This is what we decided on. He just has to cut out the hole and build a small knife holder for steak knives.

Thanks. We love the counters as they pick up colors from the floor in the marbling and have a sparkle to them.

Our cabinet guy is just as frustrated as us about the doors as they're waiting for the remaining 50% of the payment and they're mostly done their part. The story we're getting is that the doors were on a transport involved in a fireball head on collision and the manufacturer is waiting for reimbursement from the insurance company before they replace the order. Whatever. I just want my doors.

The Manufacturer should replace the doors now. I deal with that sort of crap in business all the time. You bought the equipment from them with a delivery date. They chose the shipping vendor not you, and thats there problem and now making it yours. Make some threats that you will get them somewhere else and they can keep them. You will see some action after that, and don't just make it a threat. get a quote from someone else and pay them with the 50% you are holding and give them what is left over. Sounds harsh but likely the only way to get it done at this point.

They admit that this is a bass akwards way of doing it as normally the doors and hardware would be pre installed before the cabinets go in and the counter wouldn't be in yet. They said it was a supply chain thing they've been dealing with since covid shut everything down for 2 years. Their door supplier is backed up as well.

Waiting on the island panels and a couple of top ones that were missed on the order but the kitchen is nearly done! Of course I still have to install the backsplash and vent but we haven't even picked out anything yet as we're waiting to see what it's going to look like first. 🙃

Uh, pretty sure one of the cabinet pulls is crooked :yum:

Glad you are approaching the end of this, I'm sure it was frustrating beyond belief. And it looks great too.

And the epic saga comes to a close, feel like I may miss it somehow. It does look good though.

Lmao. Not done yet. Still backplash and the vent to do but that's on me and will be done when second semester of high school starts and I'm not driving in every day.

We still have a few door panels we're waiting on to arrive. But it is sure nice having a fully functional kitchen again. Only 6 months beyond the original projected time line. 🤪

Something else to celebrate on Christmas

It's all coming together nicely. We bought the place in 2019. Since then, we did a full master bath reno, changed the toilets and sinks in 2 bathrooms upstairs, had all the hardwood floors sanded and refinished, and a bonus kick in the chestnuts was a new boiler and hot water system. But this is our planned retirement home so we wanted to make it ours.

The kitchen now flows nicely into the dining room. We had the half wall extended up 6" and a bank of cabinets installed for additional storage.

The dining room is separated by the half wall to the living room.

While waiting for the island door panels to arrive this morning, I hauled out the radial arm saw and Brad nailer and got to work finishing up the baseboards.
