COOT ATV

over the last few days an couple hours at a time I got the brake rotor caliper and brake handle all mounted, the donor is from a motorcycle. Hydraulic brake is much better than the old mechanical crap that was on it. Even knurled the handle. After mounting the handle, I realized I should have made the support go all the way across the passenger side for a grab handle. Oh well it will work as is and the passenger can hold the roll bar.

next task on it is to fabricate an exhaust flange to bolt to the motor, the muffler was mounted on the roll bar in a virticle position, I plan to raise it up a little, but bassicly put it back where it was.

Today I fabricated an exhaust flange, moved the muffler up on the roll cage about 8" and re connected the pipe.
Then put the front seat in place and discovered that the gas tank that came with the engine was able to fit back on without contacting the seat, I don't know if I will leave it as I would like more capacity, that can happen later, also the air cleaner was able to fit also.
Not much left except battery and cables, then pull the transmission back out and either silicone the mounting plate on it or make a gasket and add oil, add oil and gas to the engine, double check engine to transmission alignment, a little modification to the transmission shift lever. make sure all the bolts are tight.
Mount the seat better and give it a go. Not sure how I am going to do the throttle, for now the engine has a throttle lever that I can easily reach. After I get it going, I can add a guard for the drive chain from the gearbox so it doesn't grab my pant leg. Im sure there will be things that get added, changed and modified before I do a final clean up and paint it. one of those things that come to mind is lights. I was going to run a bench seat across the front but decided that it may cause the engine to run hot, so for now the passengers can just ride in the back

So today after chores and wood cutting, I pulled the transmission back out for final assembly. Cleaned the inside of the box with diesel then used silicone to seal the mounting plate.
While the box was out I installed the driven clutch on the box, not without a little drama. I had to fit the woodruff keys that go in the shaft, as they were a little tall to fit in the slot on the driven clutch. Tomorrow I will fill it with gear oil and do a final installation.

also pulled the motor back out to do a final installation of the drive clutch. The crank shaft has a tapped hole that is metric, I have to go get a bolt of that size 3" long to secure the clutch to the shaft.
Tomorrow I will vacuum the tubs out while the engine and transmission are out, then fill the engine with oil and do a final installation. I am going to make another cabin Trip on Thursday so it will be close to being ready to run by then.

The engine and transmission have both been filled with oil and have been installed for the last time, still need to make a better seat mount as all that changed. Also need to make a chain guard and install the chain tensioner I already made and install a battery, besides that its ready to give it a go. I may get to that point tomorrow but have a busy day getting materials and loading up for the Thursday cabin trip, so it may have to wait until I return. After playing with it for a while, I need to decide what I am going to do for a throttle, it came with both a hand throttle and a foot throttle, but they are pretty crude. Defiantly need the hand throttle for times when you need to get out and push. I think I have decided on bed liner inside and camo on the outside when I get around to painting it. Things to add later include a winch on both front and rear, I may also add heavy screen to the front and driver side to keep from being slapped with branches. Im accepting ideas if anyone has some.

There is a roll bar on this one too, may modify or change it later, the way its built, makes it a bitch to get in and out. a removable steering wheel, like a race car has could be a good improvement also.

didn't work on it today, had some estimating for real work to do plus getting ready for a work cabin trip tomorrow, I will be driving it around next week

Welded on the chain tensioner an installed the drive shaft to the rear gearbox, forgot to take a picture but I did the cables for the battery also. Got hot out so I stopped. Tomorrow I will put in some gas and give it a go. There are still a few things to finish or change, but I'm still pondering on them. I can play with it as is until then.

Looking forward to seeing the final results.

Drove the COOT out of the shop this morning, still a few odds and ends to complete at my leisure, lights, mount the key switch, chain guard, brake rotor guard, camo paint and a new roll bar. Right now its useable and I need to ponder on the modifications for a while. Time to move on to the RaidTrack.

watched the video, just a short 10 years ago, I would have cracked a kristi joke about a bath tub and it moving under its own power

speaking tub, I'm only 5'-9" and its really a tight fit, would it have killed them to make it a foot longer. if your 6' or taller it would be very un comfortable.

I will drop a photo of a coot with a front footwell added. Ill be near it sunday. I wondered about fitment

Been thinking about another front seat with no back on it. Would be a lot easier getting in and out and would add about 4" of leg room. I don't think there is much benefit to having a back on the seat.
