I use a pair of Baofeng 5RMs. (Link) I also use a headset (link) for noise canceling in my Imp. I myself keep the radio handy with a chest harness. (Link)
For the frequencies themselves I use tone guarded (100hz) GMRS channels 19, 20, and 21 which have been named "CATCOM 1, CATCOM 2, CATCOM 3" in case there is traffic on any of the channels... which there never is.
CATCOM 1 is low transmission power.
CATCOM 2 is medium.
CATCOM 3 is high power.
CATCOM 1 is used 99% of the time because it will consume the least amount of power. I monitor CATCOM 3 for long distance transmissions or use 146.520 if I need to communicate using VHF and of course have all my local emergencies frequencies and HAM repeaters programmed for monitoring or emergency use.
If you get a Baofeng radio to use, I am happy to share my radio clone file.
