AWESOME Picture Thread II

A great lakes freighter ship today had problems and was at a 15 degree list earlier as seen by the second picture. The first one is how she sailed into port in Thunder bay where I live.

Little clearer picture of her coming in. She hit something under water and was listing at 15 degrees originally. Pumps were able to keep her afloat at back to a 5 degree list. Luckily, as it turns out, there was a big search and rescue training going on all week with a few different types of helicopter from the military navy and search and rescue. They were able to divert from the training mission and respond to the (then) sinking vessel evacuating most of the crew.

13 foot crack found by divers in Michipicotin 's Hull . Report from local News outlet Tbaynewswatch :Divers Found 13 foot crack in the Hull of the Michipicotin on the local news : THUNDER BAY — A massive crack has been found in the hull of the Michipicoten, the ship that limped into Thunder Bay on the weekend after water started pouring into it on Lake Superior.
Divers have found a 13-foot-long crack during an underwater inspection conducted at Keefer Terminal, where the vessel is now tied up.
"This appears to be a result of fatigue/structural failure," a spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada told TBnewswatch in an email Monday.
In an interview with TBnewswatch, US Coast Guard spokesperson Lorne Thomas said the rupture is from "the turn of the bilge, which is where the side shell turns to the bottom plate. A 13-foot-long crack was detected by the divers, which is clearly indicative of a hull failure."
Thomas said a loud bang the ship's crew reported hearing while the vessel was in deep water likely happened at the time of the hull failure.

I've driven this road 4 times when we visited out there a few years ago. This pic makes it look so much more ominous than it seemed when I drove it.
------
write up from a local Colorado resident:

The Million Dollar Highway, (highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray Colorado) from a much wider perspective and it's just amazing, but on this shot I wanted to zoom in on the most epic section of this length of road. You can see the sheer drop off with no guard rails. The road demands your attention. Everyone is different and will feel different about this section of road. From terrified, to meh, no big deal. Either way it's an amazing stretch of road. One I've traveled many times in every kind of weather. I love this special place on the planet. Look close and enjoy.

I've driven that road often, usually in the summer, and it does command your attention. I drove it once in the spring, after the thaw, and half the road was missing and washed out in places. It went from a 2-lane road to a 1 or 1-1/2 lane road where you had to cross over on to the oncoming lane with no idea what would be barreling round the corner trying to kill you. Sometimes it's a breeze and other times it's as scary as hell.

Hoover Damn

If this picture ran just a little more south you would see the launching place for the Black Canyon tour.

This boat tour starts out just a few hundred yards south of Hoover Dam and runs all the way through the black canyon.
They float you down the Colorado River for about 15 miles through the beautiful Black Canyon.

You get to see many different kinds of birds and they take you up to a geothermal waterfall where you can reach out to touch the hot water.

Sometimes desert bighorn sheep and mule deer can be seen coming down to get a drink.

At the end of the trip they give you a box lunch and then drive you back to your car at the dam.
All in all it is a worthwhile trip for anyone from Las Vegas or tourists.

Awesome pic of 'The Shoe'.
