2019 Colorado Snowcat Jamboree

Looks like we have to miss Friday's adventures, but are for sure coming on Saturday and Sunday. Is there someone willing to offer up their phone for us to text when we get into townAlso will there be sufficient parking available for all the cats or will some be required to park elsewhere? This is our first time at the jamboree, and we like to have an idea what to expect. The time change is Saturday night into Sunday (Spring ahead 1 hour), will you still be meeting between 6-7 am? I imagine it'll still be dark then.

Parking on the weekends at VP can become crowded especially if you aren't early. I'm not exactly sure what they do when they are full, but we parked down by the rest area after unloading the cat one time. I suppose they could send people to the camp hale side or maybe Redcliff but I don't think theres much parking there. Montezuma I imagine will probably be a later start as people will be tuckered out :th_lmao:. Theres not tons of parking there either though so I could be wrong but I think its a less crowded area.

The Frandee is loaded and ready to head out first thing in the morning, only 550 miles to go.

Thanks, I did a couple days ago, should be good but I will again. We have had a thaw the last few days and everything is sinking in the mud. I think that is what you see, but I will verify. Thanks again!

That looks way too heavy on the rear springs. Any idea what the tongue weight is?

There should be parking as long as you get to the pass early! If the Vail parking lot fills then you will have to travel to the camp hale side to unload.(about an hour away).
On Sunday we will meet around 8-9am and there should be ample parking for everyone at Montezuma.

Sounds like it rained in Vail and silverthorne supposedly all the way to the Eisenhower tunnel... Another slide came down in ten mile canyon, and some gas leak in copper which is causing evacuations and fremont pass is a mess. The highway is closed again at the moment, probably till mid morning. It seems it's been closed about as much as open this week. Snow totals are getting deep had 35+ inches in 72 hours as of Monday, the grooming report for VP this morning said they had another 20 on top of that. They only got wilder gulch and resolution groomed out...supposed to head up today at some point.

We have had record amounts of snowfall here in Colorado.I would encourage anyone that does not already have an avalanche Beacon to go rent one.We will also be having a safety meeting in the beginning of each day.If you don’t have a avalanche gear I would encourage you to also stay the trail until meeting the rest of the group. By no means would I let this discourage you from coming to the event but it should raise your heightened sense of awareness. Please be aware of your Surroundings at all times.
There is tons of snow and it is expected to snow almost every day of the jamboree.

I’m going to Vail today along with Sean and Jason to set things up. Stay tuned

Ski empire sports in downieville rents beacons, packs, possible shovel and probe as well. I imagine they are available in summit county somewere or Vail too but don't know where. Extreme avy danger usually means epic conditions but extra caution and good terrain selection are mandatory. Bring the wide and long gear if you have a choice the low angle stuff is gonna be rough going I suspect.

Also a word of the wise, be prepared to spend the night since the highways keep closing (warm sleeping bags, blankets, emergency blankets, lots of layers, snacks and water could save your life). A full tank of gas doesn't hurt either. I know a number of us are planning on spending the night so it will be of little consequence to us but could be a real problem if you aren't prepared. Don't let all this scare you if you aren't used to this type of thing, it's not completely uncommon here. Always a good habit to make when traveling in the mountains in the winter.

Anybody attending the event from the Eagle/Vail side, I live in Eagle and I am happy to answer any questions and provide help if needed.

Day one of the 2019 Colorado snowcat jamboree went down with a ton of snow. I’ve never seen vail like this. We basically owned vail today and had the place to ourselfs. Lots of slids on the way up the pass.We played it safe and stayed below tree line for the most part. :bolt:

This year has been crazy with warm temps, deep snow and avalanche danger. But as always we have a great time. I was super impressed with the white cat and modified bus. They drove the bus across the country un-tested and drove the cat up Vail pass on a crazy day for its first adventure. Takes a big pair.

I havent seen it this deep in CO for many years. we arrived way late this afternoon. the parking lot we normally use was completely burried under atleast 6ft of snow and the main lot on the leadville side was still bieng plowed as we pulled in. broke trail for a ways. got up top long enough for a shot and a sandwich, headed back early because my lights arent that great. couldnt resist stopping for a few pics at sunset on the way back. looking forward to tomorrow.

Having a great time at Vail Pass, the Frandee is doing good with her flat head engine and wood track cleats. Engine is feeling the altitude, it is a little low on power, but running great with no carb adjustments. Yesterday we got to an altitude of 11754 ft, and put on 13 miles. Also tried the steering ski, it worked well on the drive in, but later I folded it up on the cab so I could be more manuverable. This Colorado crew sure puts on a great event, many thanks to all of them. And man is the snow deep.

This Tucker that came from NJ is a monster, I don't know they have under the hood, but it is incredible what it can do.
