In Quebec Canada, a DIY hydrostatic drive cat.
It is ready for action!, but has been conceived with a lot of standard features
and made to customize even more!.
It is turbo diesel powered, (VW Golf 75HP). The engine as been completely
disasembled, checked, re-ringed, and painted. It is in perfect order and has
a block heater.
Some of the cool features: a 8500lbs winch is in the front (behind grill) and
can easily be used to pull from the back too with provided pulley system.
Air suspension, with gaz shocks, are adjusted independently from the cab.
An air compressor with 4 air bags, and air pressure gauges are present.
The total width of the tracks is variable via a ram, controlled from inside the cab too. In "narrow" mode tracks overall is 72inches and in "wide" mode, 84
inches. Those 2 features to permit entry in a trailer/ home garage/ narrow
pass in a trail.
Some pictures show the difference between track width, (the un-painted pictures).
Plenty of lights up front, even a search light is present.
Of course, a Kenwood radio/cd with speakers, adjustable seats, heater,
parallel wipers are there.
Tracks are from a Bombi and grousers are aluminum. They are 28 inches wide but will need new belts in a couple of years.
Being hydrostatic, it is extremely maneuvrable and can turn in it's own length. Fuel tank has a 50 liters capacity.
Driving is via 2 "F N R" levers, on your left hand. Control from the FNR levers
are transmitted via cables to the pumps but i had electronic FNR in mind
and will tell you how to do it if need be.
There are a few things to perfect on the cat but as i said, it's ready for action!. It has been built with almost everything new on it, except tracks, engine, and tires.
Front and rearmost tires are eurethane filled and buyer should do the same with remaining 4 tires.
Hydrostatics and hydraulics are all new with about 100 hours on them.
I had all hydraulic hoses custom made with pressure over-rating so they
won't burst and last for a looooong time.
Sprockets are custom made and are new as well.
Instrumentation: a RPM/hour meter, 4 air suspension pressure gauges,
engine coolant and hydrostatic oil temps, turbo boost and fuel level gauges.
Observed top speed, on a gps: 10mph, on hard pack or deep powder, powder does not slow it down much!.
I drove this on flat land, here it's flat land only so i did not install parking brakes. It was in mind tho and i will explain how to do it (it was intended to be spring applied/air released disc brakes on the front tires. The hubs are already machined to fit discs.
I designed and built this cat myself, being a cat maintenance mechanic and
operator ( BR-180, 275, 350 ).
It took the better part of four years to built and countless hours to design.
It is not intended for hard work or mud rides, it is a fun winter rides cat!.
Buyer should be good with mechanics, and electrics as there are no shop
manuals for this! this is a one of a kind!. Sadly, the cab was designed for
a short 5' 6" myself so no tall guy is going to fit .
IMPORTANT:
The cat is not registered yet. It will have to be, as a DIY off road vehicule
so make sure you can cross the border with this in tow, if needed, as i can-not deliver myself.
It makes me sad to have to sell this but for a lack of space, places to ride and health reasons, i have to sell .
Never counted how much it cost me to build (i'm actually scared of counting it), but i am asking a bargain price of $6000.00 CAN for it.
Post any questions here if need be.
Loading pictures does not seem to work now, i will as soon as possible!...
