What’s a Flo-rater?

Need to replace my 2 ton R410A evaporator with is fitted with a txv. I have found a new evaporator for a great price…but…it comes with a R410 Flo-rater. I am not familiar with a Flo-rater, I would guess it’s a metered device. The old units are Tranes circa 2004. Will I have a problem with the condense?

Thanks for any information!

A Flo-rater is a fixed orifice metering device, while your current TXV (thermal expansion valve) adjusts to varying load conditions, providing better efficiency and control. Replacing your evaporator with one that uses a Flo-rater may lead to less efficient operation, potential capacity mismatches, and issues with overheating or improper refrigerant flow, especially in varying conditions. While it can work, performance may not match your current setup. If possible, consider swapping the Flo-rater for a TXV to better match your existing system and avoid potential problems with the condenser.
