Trying to be safe without getting sick with lead exposure since it is so dangerous to breath. Anyone know for sure? I was going to run some lead paint tests to verify unless someone knows for sure?
Lead was used in some automotive paints up till about 1980. Red, Oranges, Yellows it was pretty common. Doing a test might clear it up. IMHO any paint sanding should be done with a minimum of a rated dust mask. Lead or not you don't want that crap in your lungs.
Yes, lead was used in automotive paint until environmental laws were enacted to prohibit it:
History
Lead was used in automotive paint for a variety of reasons, including to prevent corrosion, enhance visibility, and improve drying time and durability. Lead was used in paint until environmental laws were enacted to prohibit it.
When it was used
Lead-based pigments were used in exterior paints and primers for vehicles into the early 1970s.
When it was banned
The Consumer Product Safety Commission implemented regulations in 1978 that banned lead-based paint for residential use.
I hadn't even thought about lead paint as being a potential issues. Since I just started scrubbing my pontoons I better check to be sure. I usually just wear some light cloth masks for light sanding, but if it's lead then 3M respirator and ventilation fan will be coming out!
Testing kits are dirt cheap, I think local auto stores carry them, otherwise buy a set off of Amazon
