want to buy: tractor

Erik

SelfBane
Since mine left home against my wishes and the insurance company has done me no favors in their valuation, I'm looking for a good used compact tractor with loader at bargain basement prices. prefer 30hp or better.
any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
thanks.

Well, you get what you pay for. I understand the financial aspect of buying tractors or vehicles, but, will you save in the long run? I'd really argue in favor of spending a little more up front and having a reliable tractor.

JMHO.

well, since insurance didn't give me enough to replace with similar new or to pay off another debt that would free up enough i could afford to finance, i'm forced to go with what I have in cash.
Trust me, I'm not going to be stupid about this, or I'd have already grabbed this killer almost too good to be true deal i found on Craig's list. ;) (contractor owned 35 hp TLB with 900 hours for $12k - which IS within the budget)

OTOH, do we have any members near Abilene Tx?
I found an 01 Century 3045 (same as Branson 4720) this morning on eBay currently under $7k - BiN price is $12k. (last week I had a quote on a new demo model 4720 in Ia for $16k, which is NOT within my current budget)
auction ends tomorrow, so if we had anyone in the neighborhood who could take a look at it for me I'd appreciate input on condition/value.

thanks!

The tractor you mentioned that is owned by a contractor.....what kind is it? 900 hrs doesn't sound too bad, really. Is it a repo?

mahindra 3510, which is a good machine. The contractor didn't know if it was an 04 or an 05.
having known some contractors and seeing how they've abused their equipment, I'm leery of this unit now that it's out of warranty. (still very tempting, because that really is a good deal if it's mechanically sound, but...!)

Well? Does he keep maintenance records? How are the pins in the loader and backhoe? Does he know what a grease gun is for? Look at the general condition of the tractor, above the obvious powerwashing job to get 'er cleaned up for the sale. Is stuff welded up? anything bent? How's the transmission shift? The engine is the last thing I would worry about, unless he never changed oil.

If all you hear from him is; "Hey, it's got new tires!" then I'd run. Look it over very carefully, if at all possible. Then walk away, come back and look again. Don't let your excitement get the best of you. Be prepared to say; "No thanks" as much as you're prepared to say; "I'll take it."

Sounds like you are probably looking at something other than a Kubota . Kubotas are a damn good machine ,but I think they are overpriced . I have had both a Kubota and now a Kioti and love them both . The comparible Kubota to the Kioti DK45TLB was going to cost me 14 grand more . I ended up going with Kioti and have not been sorry . But this is not about brand loyalty . A DK35 Kioti may fall within your requirements . The DK series is a little tougher built than their standard Kioti stuff .I want to say I saw one with low hours a while back for 12 Grand . Mahinda is suppose to be a pretty tough tractor also . I'll take a look around here for you .

Thanks, Al.
our local kubota dealer quoted me $21.5k for a 3240, $25.7k for a 3940 (w/loader)
Massey wanted $28750 for a 2605 4x w/loader
yesterday i drove to Wichita to look at Kioti & Mahindra and test drove a DK40. (the CK looked "small") They quoted me $21.5k for the DK35 & $23k for the DK40, $19.4k for the CK35 - and couldn't give me a delivery price other than they would charge me for it. (Funny thing here is I had a Pa dealer offer to drop ship me a DK 35 for $21.5k as well, so either these guys are overpriced or their up front costs are a LOT higher than his)
The Mahindra 3215 looked "too small" as well, but was quoted in the $16-17k range, they're checking to see what kind of deal they can make on a demo 3510 that they will do the 50 hour service on before delivery. Anything I buy from this dealer will be delivered at no extra charge.
If I were willing to go SCUT, there's a new "scratch & dent" TYM 273hst about 40 miles from me for $10.5k - it's got hail damage.

If the used TLB was less than a 5 hour drive, I'd have already gone and taken a look at it, because i've heard nothing but good about the company and their support network.

SIL next door has a ZEN NOH 2210BD(rebadged Yanmar) w/ FEL. I think it's 29 HP w/ 12 forward and 3 reverse( 4 sp main and 3 sp powershift), 3 ph and PTO,also has 4wd . She's getting old and wanted something hydro and power steering, so she bought a new 2920 Kubota w/ FEL. I've run it a lot and it is a fine little tractor. If interested PM me and I can E-mail some pics to ya .
Mike

Be careful with the Craigslist ads. My buddy and I were shooping for a machine for him. We kept finding really nice deals that were scams. (no money was exchanged) So as the old saying goes if it sounds too good to be true then maybe it is not that good... (or something like that..LOL)

I have kubota L2500 and woods loader.. very happy with the machine for my needs. I would not hesitate on any of the brand name equipment out there.

Good luck.

I have to think this thread is over with what you posted!!

Erik, where are you!!!!

dayum!
that's a VERY nice deal!
Unfortunately, $14.5k is outside the budget. :(
Insurance only gave me $11k, I have a little bit in "emergency savings" but no way to get it home after that, since my trailer is only a 7k.
we're refinancing the house Tuesday, which will free up some $$ that might allow me to take out a small loan to cover the difference, otherwise I'd have to sell the Sharps to make up the difference - custom built full stock "Gemmer" in 45/70, in case anyone is interested. :D

I test drove a DK40 last week in Wichita and it seemed like a pretty nice machine, so I have an idea of current pricing and that's very attractive - especially with the attachments tossed in for only another $500.

I'll talk to the wife today and the bank on Monday. of course, if you offload it before then, I'll understand that, too.

thanks for the offer

please be careful of craigslist. a friend put a car on it for 3000$ and after emails with a buyer got a check for 5000 car + shipping. took it to his bank and it was a fake also the address the guy gave in chatt. tn. does not even exist. he is working with local and state law to catch this guy. be careful what you do. make sure the person will meet you in person and make sure he owns what he is selling. lot of scumbags out there this time of year.:thumb:

you're absolutely correct on that one! which is why I check craigslist every couple of weeks looking for my tractor!

I may have found a replacement for mine - dealership in KC emailed me yesterday about a 98 MF 1230 they have coming in. Has loader, HST, 5' RFM, and back blade. I'll have enough left over to pay for my holiday spending and maybe pick up a post hole digger if I can find one of those TSC/Orscheln's %off any item coupons they put out every so often.
Anyone familiar with this model? I know Iseki makes good machines for MF...

Salesman in KC is a complete maroon.
called him today to see what time would be good for me to make the 2 hour drive to inspect the tractor and he not only doesn't have it on hand, he has no idea when it'll be there, because it's still being used by the current owner.

I pointed out to him I had put my tractor shopping on hold for a week because he had told me it would be there today. His counter was that he would try to get some pictures of it to email me later this week.

So I got back in touch with another mahindra dealer 150 miles the other direction who has a demo 3510 he wants to sell me - he's offering 0%/48 months and knocked another $500 off the sticker. It still costs more than the one I lost did new, but then so does eveything else these days.

The plan is to sign paperwork tomorrow or Wednesday and he'll deliver it to me after the Topeka ag show next week. (he was actually willing to deliver it before that but asked if he could use it as a demo one last time so he didn't have to transport 2 machines up here) He's even throwing in the 50 hour service free.

I won't have the spare $$ I would have on the smaller unit, but I get a reliable dealership to work with, a warranty, and about 3 times the machine...

thanks for all the suggestions - I'll post a pic when it gets here. :punk:
