Tow behind air compressor

I have an older Ingersoll Rand (IR) tow behind air compressor. http://dlnjumhieeujc.cloudfront.net...ec7b8949/f966f5cf121a4126a006ddfe9e8e1f68.jpg
IR sold that division to Doosan Bobcat 15 years ago. Tech support is hard to find now as all of that era tech support people have retired by now.

My problem is the engine won’t drive the air end. I smell rubber when I run the engine. Without separating the engine from the air end I am leaning toward the drive coupler failing. Separating them is not a small project. I found a new coupler from Doosan for $480.

Anyone here have any thoughts or experience with large air compressors?

I've been fairly lucky with my Compair 175 ,but that being said a used compressor is right up there with buying used boats . I wouldn't buy any parts until you split the screw off the motor and see where you stand .

Some investigation is in order I'd find a way to get an endoscope in there and see even of I had to drill a 1/2" hole in the bellhousing.
Id tear it down and hope it has a standard woods or rexnord or centaflex coupling in there.

I am seeing a small pile of shredded black plastic/rubber on the floor in the area of the air end. The smell of plastic/rubber is present. This is enough evidence to point to the coupler. Thanks for your input.

Yea gone are the good old easy days where Schramm used ford 6 cylinder 300cid engines with 3 cylinders driving and 3 compressing

What? I never heard of that. We have an ancient heavy forklift powered by a Ford 300. That engine is a workhorse.

On a side note, I have a Ford 300 industrial I want to sell. ;)

yes they had a special intake and exhaust manifold and heads but stock 300 block
the intake had a carburetor hooked to 3 cylinders and separate intake for the 3 compressor intakes the heads had spring loaded reed valves in it for compressor side on the exhaust same thing split engine and compressor discharge
