Timberline Lodge, April 22,23,23, 2018 last snowflake adventure

Even though we feel beat up by all the Tuckerites, we still had a great time. Thank you to all that played a part, it was great seeing everyone, and meeting others we hadn't before.

FYI

the tuckerites never targeted, bullied, or talked trash about the IMP.

the super kittens had their grousers (sights) set upon the snow tracs, and the snow tracs found that they could not make the trek up to Silcox hut once the snow warmed up a bit, the Super Kittens had no problem what so ever... game over. :)

the photo of the Super Kitten and Snow Trac was taken early in the morning,
"Meeting of the Tracks" at 7,000 feet just behind Silcox Hut.

Yes the Snow tracs are far better looking and required far less maintenance to keep on the snow, and generally a blast to own and drive, and for the money, the best vintage snow cat to own, I love snow tracs, but the Super Kittens, own your tracks.

Jinn you have to look at your pictures more closely, your missing the most interesting part of that picture. There is a cloaked alien space ship in the background. See the black blob on the far left pinnacle. Thanks again for everything and see you soon.

A huge thanks to Scott and Jinn for all the work and organizing to make this such a special event. I know I can get a little too excited sometimes but I can say it seemed everyone was just as excited and happy to be up there as I was. Such a great opportunity to have your own sno cat up there. Thanks to all involved and all that came for the fun. Congrats to Tom and all his hard work on his Snow Trac too. Glad he could make it up to the Silcox Hut this year and join in on the fun. An insane collection of cats made it to the hill this year. Talk about cool cats, I drooled a bit on the tracks of all of them. After I came home and did a few responsible things I nearly drove back up to join Jeff and Jim for the sunset again. Speaking of Jeff and Jim, if they pm me their numbers I will send a few pics and videos I have of them. It’s tough to take a bad picture up there but here are some of mine.

This lovely mother and daughter visiting from Paris begged me for a ride and how could I say no. They were so cool. Mom didn’t speak any English but didn’t need to. They did not want to come down. Pretty sure it was a highlight of their trip.

Now that’s funny, LMAO, but I can never confirm nor deny the existence of spy
Satellites. And further more, if and when, and where,I was at that given moment.
But I’m always looking for the light blue coat :yum:and no one was drinking moose head beer on that day, as Lyndon would say.

I didn't get a lot of pictures, but I got one of Jeff driving a Tucker [emoji3] and Scott in the Tank[emoji41]. I had a great time hanging with everybody!

That cab forward is really cool. Did they make very many of those?

the answer princess will take that one,

total of 4, model 544, and the 542's well over 100 were built, back to the 544, all of them came with Chrysler 273 V-8, 4 speed, disc foot brake, and the fabulous 500 pontoons, the widest ones offered on a production Tucker Sno-cat, and only 2 are known to exist.

and if you are referring to the cab forward 2 track machine, just 1, 1956, mode 422, Chrysler flathead 6, 3 speed transmission, with 400 series grousers, the body is the same width as a square door kitten and actually used the roof from the 222 Kitten.

Was the 422 a concept cat or custom ordered for a specific purpose? That is a really cool cat, you can't put a price on a one-of-a-kind machine like that.

... and the snow tracs found that they could not make the trek up to Silcox hut once the snow warmed up a bit...

Mark Twain has a lot of great quotes. One of my favorites is something like "Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool, rather than open it and remove all doubt".

At the risk of violating that wisdom, could someone explain to me what is so great about a Snow Trac?

To me, the whole concept behind a snowcat is to be able to transport people and/or gear over snow, in virtually any snow conditions. A well packed road with wet snow are conditions one is pretty much guaranteed to face every year, and yet a Snow Trac can't handle it.

Is it a lack of power from the VW powerplant (that produces horsepower numbers rivaling a lawn tractor)?

Or is it a problem with traction from the cleats (calling them grousers would be an insult to real grouser bars everywhere)?

Is the Snow Trac name merely a marketing gimmick, because it sounds better than the apparently more accurate "Tundra Trac"?

I think it was Glacier Sean in another thread who suggested the Pontoon Princesses glowing endorsement of the Snow Trac was a "Jedi mind trick". I think he's right...

So, Snow Trac lovers everywhere, please educate me. (Note: much of the above was an attempt at humor. No disrespect was intended.) But I really would like to know what people see in them...

Maybe it's "the VW thing"? (Watching the first episode of the new NetFlix series Dirty Money will quash anyone's love, or respect, for anything Volkswagen related.)

Or is it "the cute thing"? (Some people find Herve Villachaiz or Verne Troyer "cute".)

Maybe it's one of those "If you have to ask, you just wouldn't understand situations"...

Mine didn't run out of horse power. It just started digging a hole and I didn't want to make the haul road worse by keeping trying. From walking alongside while wife drove, the snow was shearing off. With the tuckers, they made at least a 6"x6" (or double that ) block that was harder to shear. I have an idea on how to improve mine. My grousers are 1.5"x1.5" bars that taper to 1.5"W x 1" H at the ends. What I think killed me was the narrow gap between grousers. The gap is basically the width of a grouser so there isn't much snow trapped.

Couple of years ago, other makes were also having issues, just this time it was 90% Tucker, 7% Snow Trac, 3% thiokol (+/- SD) so not much to compare to. I will admit the tucker phrase no snow too deep, no hill to steep, has truth to it

. A well packed road with wet snow are conditions one is pretty much guaranteed to face every year, and yet a Snow Trac can't handle it. Tr..

Also please note the place I had issues was a 75% slope. And a human sunk past ankles, so well packed may be an overstatement.

75%, seriously? That's steep, over 35 degrees, I wouldn't feel bad about that with 1.5" grousers. The current version of PB Scout with stock grousers is spec'd for up to 80% with "adequate adhesion".

Blackfoot Tucker, your comment about the purpose of snowcats is for hauling people or gear leaves out grooming as a key endeavor, but apparently the sno-trac clan haven't conceded that territory:
