The perfect personal Snowcat???

The Track Master is how wide Lyndon? 8'? Towing my Snow Master out of Canada thru Washington with a stay over in Portland Oregon then through Idaho then on into Nevada never saw one Peace officer who had any interest other than if I wanted to sell it.

Sorry about that Mouse ear:snow2_smi: ..... But now that the Snot Trac God, Lyndon has spoken ,you are officially out of the running with a Snot Master .And by just 3/8" of a tiny weanie inch . :yum: :yum:

If I can find something wrong on a SnotTrac it may be down to Krusty's and Pimps .

Does a "Puckered Tucker" make the list ??? I know they are one hell of a rig .

At least some of the Tuckers would qualify. They are narrow enough to fit on a typical car hauler. Some models have lots of passenger and cargo room. I have no idea about economy? And, if your criteria limits the height of unit then some of the taller Tuckers may get knocked out of the running. But a simple Tucker 442 or similar sized unit would probably fit into the mix.

I'd prefer belted tracks to their steel tracks/pontoons, but that is largely because of the maintainance issues I see with the pontoon models. I figure even I can fix a belt model, but the steel tracks look like a ton of work to keep in proper order.

Still, I honestly think that the Snow Trac is a tough machine, and a tough machine to beat overall.

There are far more Thiokol Imps and Super Imps still running today than all of the combined Kristi's and Snot Tracs together. This does say something about the Imp as being a great snow cat for most users and is still the primary go to snow cat for many telephone, utility companies and private owners today. Quest has an older 1404 Thiokol Imp setting on the trailer behind their office in Buffalo Wyoming today ready to go. They put the Imp into service for several days last winter doing rescue and repair work. This speaks volumes for the machines that were built by Thiokol, DMC and LMC over the years. I still miss my old 1404 wide track as it never left me stranded and could go where many people never imagined. It was light weight, easy to trailer, 6 passenger capable with the larger cab, economical Ford power, high speed if the snow conditions allowed and basically easy to repair and maintain. How much more can you ask? :pat:

I own a 1200 LMC, Tucker Kitten, Aktiv TracMaster, 1999 VMC Diesel hydrostatic drive, and a Bombardier BR100+ and still miss the Thiokol Imp. :thumb:

Well Heck then ! Lets throw that baby on the list .
Bill , do they still make the imps???

No, Imps went out of production when Thiokol was bought. I believe DMC made a Super Imp but that was it. Not sure what year was the last but guess 1984 or so. I must say I did love the one BYOUNG had when I drove it and LOVE my new Super Imp! Power. Easy to work on. 7' wide (needs to be wider for powder snow conditions) Parts are available at any Napa store. Has the Ford C6 automatic transmission. NICE!

I agree an imp would be a great cat, Power, size, weight, maneuverability, reliability. What are some other cats??? Was a Bombi ever available with a full cab over the mid engine.

How about the Thiokol 601 machines? I don't know the physical dimensions, but for a personal snowcat, they have the interior capacity for both storage of goods and plenty of people too. They have more interior capacity than a Snow Trac.

I just am not sure about overall size & weight so I don't know if they could meet BigAl's criteria for towability???

We have a lot of Imps on the forum. :yum:

The standard Thiokol Imp was changed to the Super Imp (6 cylinder Ford) during the DMC period of Thiokol snow cat history. nutsster's modified Imp was an early (60's)? air cooled Imp model. This shows the progression of Thiokol Imp snow cats and how they evolved into the more modern 1500 LMC snow cat. The 1500 LMC should be on the list as it is probably the most desired and sought after personal user snow cat today. Many people would like to have one. I had one and it just did not trip my trigger. Bill at Snotrans can probably enlighten all of us on what is the best of the Thiokols and which model is most desirable and user friendly for the average user. :myopinion:

The Super Imp has everything I really like. Power, automatic trans, nice payload capability (2600 lbs), easy to tow, realativly inexpensive 15K to 25K, EASY to gets parts for (NAPA), and looks good.

The early 1402 Imp with the Wisconsion engine seems to be similar in alot of respects to both the Kristi and the Snowtrack. Air cooled opposed four cylinder power for all three. Although Kristi and Snowtrack have their drive sprockets up front where 1402 is rear, Kristi uses the same planetary steering from the OC-4 that drives the 1402. All have smooth bellies with no axle tubes crossing under. Engines are mounted forward of the driver in all three of these machines. Similar size weight and footprint. With the biggest differences in track and grouser design, Kristi's fiberglass body, Snowtrack variator belt drive, and Imp's wider passenger deck, it seems they were built to compete with each other.

Do you have any info on how the Kristi and the 1402 Had simular planetary steering units? I have been asked if I know what trasnaxle is in the Kristi. I have heard its an oc4 but it doesnt look the same. Thanks

Look at Big Als post "water walker" in restorations. That one is a KT4a and other models may run something different I don't know. I took a guess that the KT 3 uses the same thing. Case configurations can differ with these differentials too. I don't have any info on Kristi's but someone here should.

Yes the KT4 transaxle does look simular but not the same. Its not far off though. The KT3 for some reason is what I thought you were refering to but see now it was the KT4. Sorry for the confusion. I need more coffee.

Well this is my first post I HAVE BEEN A READER FOR A TIME AND HAVE FOLLOWED ALL THE RESTERATIONS TO HELP ME TO KNOW WHAT TO BUY. LAST FALL I DROVE A 1450 AT SAFETY ONE AND FELT IT WAS TO SMALL. MED WINTER I DROVE WITH MY WIFE TO NAVADA AND HAD A FUN DAY WITH A PB170D PISTON BULLY IT WAS A GREAT CAT. BUT THERE 3 THINGS THAT MADE ME NOT BUY.1ST IS IT WAS 15FT WIDE AND MY GATE IS ONLY 16FT 2ND HYDROSTATIC DRIVE WITH THE OTHER EQUPMENT THAT I HAVE DRIVEN HOSESS BRAKE AND LEAK AT THE WORST TIME. 3TH IT WAS A DIESEL AT MY CABIN WE ARE OFF THE GRID AND RUNNING THE GENARATER TO WORM IT UP IS OUT OF THE QUESTION I HAD BEEN LOOKING ON THE NET AT BILL FROM SNOTRANS SITE AT THE THIOKOL 1202 SO TWO WEEKS A GO I DROVE 955MI TO IDAHO FROM PARKER CO. TO LOOK THE CAT IT SEEMS TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE FOR A 1977 WITH 302 HR SO AFTER I GOT HOME I SENT HIM A DEPOSIT AND HOPE TO PICK IT UP AT THE END OF THE MONTH SO THAT MAKES MY CHOUSE A THIOKOL 1202

Now don't be a stranger and I sure could use some help "verbally attacking" those damn Snow Trac guys . Now there is a bad group .

Again welcome :tiphat: and if we can ever help ...... just ask !

WELCOME SHOVANL!

Dont pay any attention to the resident whack job I mean Kristi Klan Leader aka BIGAL. He's just jelouse someone else out there will have an actual running snowcat for this up and coming winter season. So you bought your self a Thiokol! I have 4 and love them all. I agree the 1450 is a tad bit on the small side. For a guy like BigAl they are out of the question. Not enough room in the cabin for his EGO. Anyway welcome to the forum. Can you post some pictures?

Yes. My Super Imp is for sale. She is in excellent shape with only (308 original hours) and will have all premium series 90 belting on her later this summer or sooner if someone wanted her. The Super Imp in my opinion is one of a few of the best personal use snowcats on the market. One of the easiest snowcats to tow behind a regular vehicles. No need for specialized tow rigs. They are excellent for small businesses looking for a cat to transport personel to remote site carrying up to 1500 lbs of gear and make the PERFECT cabin access snowcat. The Super Imp has the beautiful OC12 rear diff which is one of the absolute best and strongest rear diffs out there to date! I have added the to that diff the stainless steel slave cylinders which will never rust and are custom made by one of perfectionist members SNOWCAT PAT. They are even serial numbered. I have added an Oddesey battery (which are the absolute best) and enclosed everything on the deck in a rear aluminum tool box which really cleaned everything up. I took her this winter to our most remote sites we had (over 700 miles logged this winter). The only problems I had with her were the track belting (hinges broke) and some flat tires. I have sinced replaced the tires and will be replacing the belting. I also had a pin hole leak in one of my radiator belts which I replaced in the field. Other than that she performed beautifully! In fact I would keep her but she is not suited to me staying in the field with a crew for extended times. My new cat is being custom built specifically for the needs I discovered after my first season working (see my new thread SNOWOPS latest addition to the fleet). Other things I have done include adding Audi Leather bucket seats (which were a god send on those LONG trails) and sound deadoning the cab area. You can see my upgrades as I installed them on my Super Imp thread. PM me if your interested. I may beable to deliver her to you as well depending on where you live.
