The bunker

I saw some folks on the tube that bought one of these. It was a bit smaller and they converted it into a home.
 
That is too cool. If you ever decide to share the price, I too am all ears [or eyes as the case may be].

Uses.....so many I can't think of what to list:pat:

Until you find the ideal use you could always taunt Bin Laden or Kim Jong then play hide and seek! Was going to say hide and seek with Junkman or maybe some of the SpudGun gurus around here, but I presume you want to try out the lead linear.
 
Someone was talking about a FF get together. I think we found just the place. Somehow, it sems appropriate. I can't think of any good reason why it's appropriate; I guess that's why it seems so.

I'm game!
We can do damn near anything we want without anyone even knowing about it. Every day there's a triaxle dump truck that parks on the roof. If you listen very closely, you'll hear him come in but otherwise, it's darn near soundproof.

Now, just need to figure out what to do with it. The kids still enjoy it for riding bikes, playing dodgeball... Works very well for RC cars too. :thumb:
 
Ya know, you might want to take a geiger counter into the bunker just to be sure. You never know when some radioactive polonium will sneak into your bunker. Just ask that ex-KGB spy........wait, can't do that cause he died.:pat:

Good question for real....what is the government's responsibility if you ever discover any kind of waste in or around the bunker? :o

You got me??? :confused2: I'll bet they would have a little clean-up to do (or have to buy it from us).

The beauty of this site is that it was never "intended" to hold any radioactive materials. That means that there's no knowledge, documenation or otherwise to denote any NBC elements were contained inside. There's filters for radioactive (as well as chemical and biological) contamination but they're connected such that it filters from the outside. There's nothing showing filtration for such coming from the inside.

There are other underground facilities nearby that were built for and probably did house WMD's. Those sites can't be given away...

I wasn't even thinking anything that exreme. All it would take is a PCB filled transformer that once upon a time leaked all over, or there was a major diesel or motor oil spill. I know that oil companies are responsible for ground contamination from service stations, even if the property has since been sold.
 
I think we're clear Dave. We did A LOT of checking for anything like that.

Any spills that occurred over the life of the facility have been tracked and reported. Nothing of consequence has been noted.

The closure report for the facility spans a couple 3" binders. Everything was buttoned up to a "T". When the facility was shut down, the work performed (and reflected in the closure report) was pretty extensive. Based on the report as well as what I can physically see, it was done in great detail (and at great expense).
E.g.
  • The only asbestos in the place was the floor tile. That and the adhesive was removed then the floor was sand-blasted to assure everything was gone.

  • They emptied the fuel tanks (70,000 gallons worth if I recall correctly), sent people in the tanks to scrub, washed them out then filled with concrete.

  • All refrigerants removed from all chillers and A/C units (the old R-12 or whatever else they used) and the system/lines purged.
But, just in case they didn't report something (which is highly unlikely since it was an AT&T facility very closely watched/regulated by the government) we did our own checking.

  • We did air quality tests for everything we could think of.
  • Scraped any residue of anything off the floors and had it tested.
  • Groundwater testing for fecal coliform, hydrocarbons and whatever else we could think of.
  • Brought in Geologists, Groundwater and remediation specialists (all the guys that clean up fuel and other spills).

All tests and reviews gave it a clean "bill of health".

I take the kids there all the time. Germ free??? Don't know about that one. School is in session, winter is here... I'm sure there's germs but they're probably more in/on the kids.

Actually, there is one thing. There's a slight mildew smell due to lack of air movement. Firing up the blowers kills the electric bill so I try to avoid that.

I want to scrub the floors (see my wanted ad for a floor scrubber) but other than using Febreeze, anyone have any recommendations for removing the odor?
Right now (using no HVAC whatsoever, humidity is around 67%, temp is 50.4).

I'm also considering wine storage but most of the NY wines have a vintage of "Wednesday" so I think it may be hard to find a client to store wine for a few years...

Perhaps BigAl can smuggle a case of cigars from Cuba every time he goes to Panama, and they can be stored in your secret bunker? That shouldn't take long to build your inventory. :yum:

The volume is what would kill me.

For the main room, I need 30 of their large ones (which last 12-16 weeks)

From the cart:
30 x Environmental Air Sponge 4 Pound 30 x $38.95 $1,168.50

That's about $4000/year. :eek:

I need to read their site (tomorrow, since it's late). I may get some of these for other applications as well.

Our store is a dealer for those air sponges, and I can tell you that they do work well. I can get you a deal on them if you are interested. Junk....
 
Things to use it for? Since it seems you don't plan on using it as a residence, you can set it up as archival storage space for any universities, or labs in the area, might have to get that humidity down, but it would at least generate income. An indoor target range comes to mind as another use, the neighbors can't complain about the noise since it's underground. A paint ball battlefield? Could build and display a huge HO scale train layout and charge admission. Set it up and open it as a cold war museum?
 
I just had another thought as an income producing business: Worm ranching and mushroom growing. Also hydroponic gardening as you have a controlled environment all year long. With grow lights and water, you can grow and possibly even sell produce all year long.
