Spray on foam house insulation !!!

I want it in my new house ! Everything I have read impresses me about this stuff . The kicker is the average house cost $13000 to insulate !!!!! The new house will be far from average . I am looking at $20,000 plus !!!

Man o man ! I can go R-19 fiberglass in the walls and R-38 in the ceiling and floors and double wrap with Tyvek on the outside and inside of every room and still beat that cost by $8000 bucks .
I started double wrapping my projects and houses 20 years ago . It is amazing how much I save on heating cooling cost .

We have had 6 hard cold (32 degrees and lower) months here at the ranch and my wood use on a 1300 square foot home is maybe 3 1/2 cords of pine for the whole year . At $70 bucks a cord that is cheap heat . I do have gas backup but the 250 gallon tank is only filled once a year and it also heats the water and is used for cooking .
Anybody using this new spray on insulation and is it worth the cost ??

Closed cell or open cell?

I have had some closed cell applied to a inside wall of my "toys" shop. Critter proof, and very stiff/hard. More expensive than open celled foam. But for this application, worth it.

Open cell is fragile and must be covered if in an area where it could be damaged.

I had the inside of a van spray foamed. Excellent !

I felt strongly that my next house would be foam insulated to defeat rodents which I've had Enough of !!! But I saw a product that may have changed my mind.

It has more insulation for the thickness than fiberglass and is denser which would defeat rodents. It costs 91 cents per sq. ft.(R23) compared to 53 cents for fiberglass(R19). Flameproof, doesn't settle.

I'm afraid of bugs like ants getting into foam. I know they have tunnelled into pink foam... I haven't chopped out any of the green foam insulated concrete forms that I used....

Sounds like the closed cell stuff to me Pixie. Price is in the right range as well. It is very dence hard to the touch. Don't know about the mice, but it will defeat the my cats who try to burrow into it.

Probably not nessary in all applications.

Moved into the house in December, spent $17.860.00 for open cell in all of the exterior walls, up and down including the garage. December was colder than normal and came up with a heat bill of over $460.00. Garage is over 1000 feet and kept at 70. Sun room over 500 sq feet also at 70. Whole house including sun room is 2800 on main floor. Upstairs close to 1200 feet.

February bill was $155 with the garage and sunroom at 40 degrees and the main floor at 60 upstairs at about 50 which means the upper furnace does not run.

Heat is electric is 4.2 cents per hour on the winter rate.

Here is the trade off as i understand it. They have found the open cell will absorb and hold moisture (not good). And the closed cell is made with fermaldehyde (if there is ever a fire its a death trap.) very effictive insulation but not worth the money and risk as i see it

Kirk, Roxul is a rockwool and comes in batts. I'm thinking spray foam would cost double of that.

One thing that is good about foam is that it would add stiffness to a structure but I don't want ants or formaldehyde.... and even checking for ants or wetness would destroy the insulation.
