It’s been a year; the wheels of justice truly grind slow. Yesterday was the first day of the trial and it's expected to wrap up today or tomorrow. I’ll skip the smaller details and jump straight to the heart of the event.
Everyone that frequented Tommy's store knew that Tommy had money on the premises although I think it was grossly over-estimated as to just how much. The robbery was planned out in advance and involved 4 individuals. Three of them would enter the store, get the money and hand it out the drive up window to the getaway driver. Then they would run outside as the getaway driver drove up to the door and they would all leave town rich.
On the day of the planned robbery, two of the soon-to-be robbers did a dry run by going into the store, talking with Tommy and buying some minor things. They must have been comfortable with the results and later that day they all piled into the car and drove to the store. One of the bad guys had gotten high and passed out so they were down to 3 (although one of them brought his girlfriend with him). Two bad guys entered the store with ski masks on, one of them carrying a pistol. As they came through the door the lead guy yelled “Where’s the man with the money” and made the pistol very visible.
There were several patrons sitting at a table and they dove for cover. Hearing the commotion, Tommy grabbed his pistol and exiting the office he confronted the robbers. It appears Tommy shot first, hitting the man with the gun in the chest. Almost as though this was a bad movie, the bullet hit a large metal pendent hanging around the gunman’s neck and did little more than to knock the man back a few steps. When the shooting started, robber #2 turned and ran out the door.
The robber with the gun returned fire hitting Tommy 3 times, once in the chest, once in the neck and once in the head. Tommy died instantly and the shooter turned and ran.
Ultimately everyone was captured, including the man who helped plan the robbery and furnished the pistol, but ironically enough didn’t participate in the actual event. Robber #2 (that ran out when the shooting started) is turning State evidence in return for a lesser sentence. From what I’ve heard, none of them has shown the slightest bit of remorse.
