Prepaid gift cards

OhioTC18

Gone But Not Forgotten
I have a need to acquire one or two of these this year for gift giving. I've seen some that have attached monthly fees, such as a Green Dot card. First you buy the card @ $5.00 then there is a monthly fee of $5.95. How do you load money on them?

I don't want to get a store specific card, which gives the recipient more options. I noticed our bank offers one, but not very much specific info on their website as to any other fees. Are bank issued prepaid MC/Visa cards any good to get? I think you just go into the bank and get one and put down cash money to load it. Am I correct in this? I don't want to connect it to my bank account in any way. Nor do I want any recurring monthly fees.

I've only bought store-specific cards lately. I thought there was a law enacted recently that made many of these "fees" illegal. The main one being an "inactivity period" fee.

I read an article over the weekend about staying away from these prepaid cards. They hoodwink a lot of folks with the fees and when they go to use the cards they are next to worthless. The person giving them does not know and most hit fees as soon as they are issued. A lot of recipients wait til after Christmas for sales and if they don't use them up the fees hit again in January and use up the cards remaining value.

Great, now the government is interfering in gift cards. Where will it end?

I was just pointing out in some areas it is ok for the governemnt to interfere, and some not. Just asking. This was before our off forum chat so I was kinda messing with you. I will stop, ok?
