Pipe Smokers

Pipe smokers, arise. We are being suppressed by all these cigar fanatics here.
Seriously, for those who like pipes and the blends they use.
I am currently using a briarwood with a curved stem.
I burn Benedictine tobacco in it. A blend made locally with chemically untreated tobaccos. Good smoke, not too harsh unless you forget to clean the pipe.
Also sometimes burn an Almondine blend. Kind of a nutty flavor, though it has a chocolaty smell to others.

I used to smoke a little ganga in a pipe back in the day....:whistling:

Hookahs look pretty cool. Ever tried one with Egyptian tobacco?

My Grampa always smoked a pipe. It's a rare thing to see anymore.

I'm not a smoker but I'd know the smell of Gramps pipe tobacco anywhere. :)

The good thing about pipes is you mostly don't inhale the smoke. The nicotine is absorbed through the membranes in the mouth.
Never tried a Hookah. Back then I used a bong.

My dad smoked a pipe for a while. Never a cigar. He picked up the pipe after he quit cigarettes. I always loved the smell of a pipe.

As for Hooka, I don't get it. We recently started selling it in our stores. 2 of the 3 stores seem to sell a reasonable amount of it, one of the stores can't give it away. Its sort bizarre and I don't quite get how the pipes work with the charcoal, tin foil and the gooey tobacco that seems to be mixed with either honey or molassass and is typically fruit flavored???

Yup, that's what I said but it took me a whole paragraph to do it.

As for real pipe smoking, I was walking into Target and there was an older gentleman standing outside smoking a pipe. Not sure what flavor tobacco he was smoking but it was a very aromatic flavor that smelled of cherry. It was wonderful to smell that and I walked over to the guy to chat with him. He said he always worries when strangers walk up to him while he is smoking because apparently a fairly high % come over to bitch at him about stinking up the air. Me, I went there to thank him for the aroma that brought back memories of my dad. He thanked me and we had a nice chat.

Now all that said, I tried a pipe many years ago. It just didn't work for me. Lots of effort. Seems like you have to futz around with it to keep it lit, lots of cleaning, etc. But I do love the aroma.

Yeah, they take some fiddling. given that, I enjoy the aroma and flavors.
hat older fella was probably burning one of the commercial cherry blends. That and apple seem to be a big fave for the tobacco companies to make.

I absolutely despise the smell of cigarette smoke and it literally makes me physically ill besides almost always triggering a migraine headache. If you've never had a migraine, let me tell you, they are just so much fun....not!

I tried a couple of cigars in college being that I was in the cool group...right. Can't say that I ever enjoyed any and I couldn't get that nasty taste out of my mouth for days after smoking one. I know the stink lasts that long (even with a few dozen brushings of your teeth) because I met a nice young girl on a Saturday morning after I'd smoked a cigar on Thursday night and she wouldn't let me kiss her because she said I had some nasty cigar breath. :ermm: I dropped those like a bad habit.

Now on pipes. I'll admit that there are several different guys I know who smoked pipes that seemed to not only not "stink", but almost act as a room deodorizer. One guy switched between a cherry smelling blend and a vanilla blend. I always wondered how I'd react to one.

Dargo, only way to know is to try it. If it is only for kicks, buy a corncob pipe and a oz of whatever blends you want to try. Most good sized towns have a decent tobacco shop.

Corncob pipes are only about $5 to $7 each. A step up would be on of the mass produced briar pipes, prices range but expect to pay $15 to $20.

My shops have only a modest selection of tobaccos for pipes, we have bulk containers with about 8 different tobaccos available to be custom blended by customers. We also sell a dozen or so pre-packaged brands.

Cheapest pipe here is a corncob for 19.95. Some of my pipes are worth upward of 500.00. The shop I use has about 80 separate blends. Everything from straight turkish to really hopped up flavor blends.

Well, I don't want the first pipe I try to taste like burnt popcorn. There again, it probably wouldn't be too cool for me to bring a bong home either...

Is there some sort of cherry/vanilla blend, or am I just imagining that smell?

Yes there are cherry tobaccos and vanilla tobaccos and cherry vanilla blends.

Oh, and if you don't want to look like Jed Clampett with a corn cob, you could look like Sherlock Holmes with a calabash.

If properly made, no burnt popcorn taste. There are several commercial made cherry or vanilla blends. Some of the hand mixed version are also good. And usually higher quality for about the same price.

loco, as we are going to begin building a new cigar lounge within the next 30 days, I'm going to have room for a vastly expanded selection of pipe tobacco and accessories. I'd really appreciate it if you could educate me (while you are educating Dargo) on the various brands of pipes, tobaccos and accessories that you favor. Even providing links to websites if you can do that.

Ok. I'll give it a shot. To let you know, I smoke more for my own enjoyment than for snobbery. That said, the meerschaum pipes are the highest of the high, if well made. I have one, but have never smoked it.
Briarwood in any make is usually a good go for pipes.
Will try to get you some good links for tobacco shops.
If you have somebody who is willing to mix, maybe some shops will license out their mixes.

I'd be really interested in the brands of pipes that you enjoy. I know there are many brands, and many unbranded pipes too. Mass produced Dr Graybow on up to custom stuff.

The same is true with tobacco. We sell Mac Baron as our premium bulk product but I wouldn't know if it was good or bad!

Here are some that I can think of but I don't know if they are good, bad, popular or whatever:
CAPTAIN BLACK
CRISS CROSS
DAN TOBACCO
DAVIDOFF
ERIK NORDING
GRANGER
HALF AND HALF
LANE
MAC BAREN
MIXTURE NO. 79
ORLIK
PALADIN
PETER STOKKEBYE
SAIL
SAMUEL GAWITH
SIR WALTER
SKANDINAVIK
SUTLIFF
VELVET
W O LARSEN

I sell some of those, mostly the common mass produced stuff like Sir Walter Raleigh, Velvet, Sail, Mix 79, Capt Black, etc. What I'd like to expand into (only at this new lounge) are the better brands but I don't know one from another. Same with pipes!

Cigars I know. Pipes/pipe tobacco I admit to be clueless.

Ok, give me a few days for research. This is better done face style than computer. Will let you know some good premium blends.
Also, will see if the local shop here still does bulk order or not. Their stuff is first rate.
On pipes, not any special brand. If I like it, I use it.
H.I.S. Italian made, Grabow freehand. Meerschaum eagle head. All the rest are too worn for me to read any more.

Captain Black Gold is my 'emergency' gotta have a smoke brand.
Usually I use and mixed bought from local shops.
Wouldn't smoke h&h unless I had a gun to my head.

Bought 2 new pipes yesterday, both Italian made. One HJN semi-curve, and an H.I.S. straight pipe.
Using Benedictine blend in the semi-curve and Scottish Baron Flake in the straight.
Benedictine is normal smoke, but the Scottish is a little harsh, like it was a bit too dry.

I just came home from the nicest cigar lounge I've ever seen. The humidor was bigger than any I've been in by a wide margin. I was also very interested in their pipe selection and pipe tobacco but that was very disappointing compared to the vast array of cigars. They had 2 wall cases of various pipe tobaccos, some of the brands were those I carry, some were premium brands I was not familiar with. But the selection was really very small. Pipes were in a glass case, they had maybe 3 dozen of them, and some were obviously in the $150 to $250 range. Others were probably in the $25 to $59 range.

Robert McHarg

You mention a pipe, and that man's name instantly pops into my head.

Mr. McHarg was one of the leaders of my Boy Scout troop back in the day and he always smoked a pipe. He spent some time in England and had his tobacco sent over from there. I have no idea what brand it was or if it was a specific "flavor", but to this day if I smelled it in a football stadium, I'd still know exactly what it is.

Good memories of a good man.

Even though I always loved the smell of a room where one is smoking a pipe I never cared to smoke one myself.

Fired off the clay pipe this morning using 'Benedictine' blend. Tasted awful. Guess it would have been better w/ wacky tobacky.

Picked up a new blend. Coco Cream. Fantastic aroma and a good taste. Very black tobacco and pack really tight, so if there is any fouling in the pipe it is hell to draw. Also don't heavy pack it.
BTW all my Tobaccos come from the Tobacco Case in Greenwood, SC.
