Well that seems to be the take away from this article and a study related to Hip Dysplasia, a painful hip disease that afflicts many larger breed dogs.

Link to article that describes things in simple English so people like me can understand it => http://www.instituteofcaninebiology...splasia-in-dogs-psssst-look-in-the-kibble-bag

Link to PDF file of the research => http://www.instituteofcaninebiology...nd_radiographic_evidencehip_joint_in_dogs.pdf

It may be that the bag of Kibbles & Bits or even that expensive Science Diet that is "free fed" to your dogs is what is causing the hip dysplasia? The graphs below show pretty clearly that even dogs who have a "restrictive diet" of controlled levels of food can get Hip Dysplasia but the incidence of suffering from it is significantly higher for dogs who have the ablilty to eat as much as they wish and/or over eat.

No surprise, other than certain high energy breeds most dogs I see today are overweight. Kind of like their owners.

old Macarthur had it he was a pretty active dog up till the day he croaked. he always ate what he needed and no more our new mutts are gluttons and I have to have them on a diet or the eat like our teen age boy.
