The Crazy Scot, #3
Wow, what a day!! Put my first few hours of driving a "REAL" truck on the streets of Detroit!! First thing I learned, is that the first 5 gears are pretty slow. Second thing, some people will move for you.
Thirdly, it's not much like driving a manual trans in your car or light truck. With the transmissions in the big trucks, the gears are not synchronized, so you have to double clutch your way through, both upshifting and down shifting. I was always taught not to rev the engine when changing gears. When downshifting in one of these, you have to, or you don't make the gear. It can be a workout in the lower gears, from 6th on up, everything seems to smooth out very noticably.
Man, this stuff is fun, and to think I'm going to get paid for it too!!!!
