Newbie tucker adventure

Here's my adventure, I'm leaving tomorrow on a 10 hr drive to load my first sno cat onto a trailer to bring home.

Here's a picture.

I posted a gearing question about these rigs in restoration/project section as I was lurking on the purchase of this rig. i've since sealed the deal.
I can't wait to get it home!:beer:

Merry Christmas early I'd have to say!

You gonna have a lot of fun with that!

Be carefull and have a safe trip........

Regards, Kirk

Dave where are you located and what are your plans for usage on this nice new cat you have picked up. getting the wife to buy off on it is a first step and the most important i to this day still remember the look on my wifes face when i backed up to my st to load it on the trailer but there was nothig she could say for the last 10 years i gave and it was my time for a toy now that it occasionaly makes a bit of loot it's just icing on the cake but the best part is we get out of town in the winter now and nobody gets cold or has to ride in a sled.

I went straight into the weekend storm that had WI covered up in snow, horrible conditions. A normal 4 hour drive from Duluth MN to the Wausau WI area turned into 7 hours. We made it back up to Duluth in less than 6 mostly due to the fact that hardly anyone was on the roads for our return trip loaded with the tucker. We busted drifts 3 to 4 ft deep on HWY 53 north Sat night, it wasn't a whole bunch of fun.

But the machine is home now, we are close to Lake of the woods in far northern MN. The Tucker will be used mostly for lake travel in the winter pulling ice fishing houses and just goofing off going places that trucks cant go.

here's some of the nicer roads we drove on to get the sno cat.

Here it is after a test drive (what a hoot). We put it up on the trailer after this photo.

so did you get it bought for the asking price or did you or best offer him. had you not bought it I would have. have fun with it.

I gave them what they were asking. They held it for me and I was very impressed when i saw it. They are a great bunch of guys, they put a new alternator on, voltage regulator a fuel filter, changed the one bearing that was out... They had it ready to go.

Dang thing runs so nice, it just purrs.

I think I did well for $4500

Come on snow!!

You did well............ that same machine out west would bring way more
we have seen some in the same condition bring 12,500 out west

Thanks.

I'm stoked, I love driving that thing, it's hillarious how it feels like you are at a low speed drift all the time because the back end sweeps around when you turn.

Thanks guys. She's still on the trailer I borrowed from my buddy Scott. He's a bad influence, he's got 2 dozers, a skid steer that now has tracks, a track hoe and a very cool Nodwell that he bought from you Boggie! LOL!!

Him & his buddy Shane who has also bought rigs from you are both a terrible influence on me.

I'll likely be calling you looking for parts from time to time.

I tried starting it yesterday but it has a woosy battery in it. it's new but it's only like 375 CCA and it's been -20 or colder, plus it took a 6 hour drive through that WI blizzard sitting high on a trailer so she's really froze up. Then another 5 hour ride on the trailer last night to complete my trip home.

I have better batteries at home, maybe I can get it to fire up and drive it off the trailer tonight after work.

Congratulations! What a find - you are hooked now! Now get out there and snowcat... with lots of pictures & videos of course...

OMG, you admit to knowing those guys? the Greenbush boys

Yep, my buddies lol!!

Damn it's cold, the little 318 in the tucker says "CLICK!"

And that's it.

It has a lower hose heater but it must be shorted out, it trips the ground fault.

So, one of the greenbush boys borrowed me a magnetic heater which I have on the oil pan now. I have the battery out of it and in the shop (which by the way is a 930 CCA) I misread the label, so it's a damn good battery, or was at one time. It's 3 years old, could go for another 7 yrs, could be shot now... we'll see. I'm about to go out & toss a fresh warm 850CCA in it & see what happens.

you may have to crank it faster your best bet is to ditch that hose heater and install a freeze plug heater i have lots oh hours of tinkering with the 318 if it has a lot of hours you may want to change the timing chain and gears as the cam gear is plastic and wears fast

No good, she cranked but no fire :(

I'll try tomorrow after its been plugged in for a day (with the pan heater)

Yep, Dave I think you better just sell it to me. to much trouble now that is does not run its not worth as much. give you what you have in it if you haul it down. that is if you top off the tank on the way down....:shifty:

Too kind, too kind lol!!

Well I think I might could manage, if there is one thing I CAN do it's making an old gasoline engine run lol!!

We'll be sparking & sputtering tomorrow and I'll get her all thawed out & do some MN ditch running with her.

Wooooo!!! She's ALIVE!!!

Awesome!! We went for a cross country run up to the neighbor's & back (mile away) and did some playing around in the yard & ditches around home.

What a freeking hoot!! I love this thing!!!

I need an alternator though, it isn't charging. I tested voltage right out of the alternator & I't really isn't putting anything out.

But we had enough battery juice to play a little.

if that has a mopar alternator on it full field the alternator first and check that the alternator is working as that rig should be all solid state i wolld do like i did on my old dodge pickup and mount an extra regulator ballist resistor and control module in to the firewall next to each component that way if you ever loose a box or resistor it's just a mater of un plugging the old one and plugging in the new box . speedy repairs are a plus when the snow is comming down and the wind is blowing

When discussing matters that are electrical, espacially mopar electrical... speak slowly and use small words for Dave lol!!

I tested with the engine running for voltage coming off the one single terminal on this alternator (looks mopar) and I was seeing 10-ish to 11-ish on my meter.

seems telling to me but... do you suggest anything further?

on the back of the alternator is a wire makked field should be 18 gauge and green in color disconect that wire and ground out the termanal on the alternator and that will put the alternator into full output if your are still seeing battery voltage at the stud alternator is bad if voltage jumps up to 14 volts or more the alternator is good replace the regulator the regulator is a small square box with a triangle shaped plug it must have a good gound to the fire wall and you must have a good body gound to the engine dont rev the engine when ful fielded your alternator can make up to 50 volts un regulated

check grounds and full field the alternator as a last resort that green wire goes from switched power to the field termmanal with a t in the wiring going to the regulator

Don, could my key switch (ignition switch) have anything at all to do with it? There are definate issues with the ignition switch, it's pretty floppy and won't always engage the starter. With the machine running & can wiggle the key and watch the gauge fluctuate a bit... Just a thought.
