This is a 1978 SV301 it has a ford 300 six w/auto trans. I dont have a lot of pics of it but I have replaced or rebuilt every thing on it. I am in the process of fabbing an 8 way blade for it now.

Welcome, Jaybe2 !

You've done a great job on that cat :cool2:

It has rubber torsion suspension ? I'm thinking about changing an older Bombardier to that.

ok welcome and i have a question :confused2: . I am about to show my lack of snowcat knowledge here but what brand is a SV301?
Looks like your doin it right . Have fun and post often . Do you have a manual on it ???

It made by Bombardier. Pixie I just bought an SV302 for parts not sure Im going to part it out though, I think it might be worth saving. It still has all the axles (torsion) if I do part it out I will let them go cheap.

Are those cut down J Style Thiokol grousers? The SV301 I used to have didn't work very well with asymetrical tracks. Have you tried them yet or is that configuration factory?

The tracks are off a bombardier SV302. They did have another 8" belt on the out side. I talked to a gentlemen at bombardier that told me I could cut the tracks down this way, I just had to put an idler wheel for the inner part of the track to ride on. What kind of problems did you have? I only did asymetrical because I thought it looked funny with a big gap between the track and belly pan.

I still think that the snowtrac is prettier! Lovely restoration job though, congratulations.
Im with you on this one. But I was not looking for pretty. I was looking for something to pull a drag with, If we ever get any snow.  I have 4 volkswagens in the stable and cant picture any of them pulling anything.

The previous owner of my old machine had removed the outer belt and then fastened timbers onto the frame to stop the inner track from sagging down. It came with the aluminum powder grousers and every other grouser bolted to the outer or the inner belt. He just pulled all the outer grousers in and bolted them to the inner belt. If a rock or stump passed under the track just right it would cause the inside belt to come up and hit the frame. I put outer belts back on which made the Cat about 11' or slightly wider but it sure worked well in the powder after that. I'll be courious to hear how this works for you. I'm sure an idler wheel will work better than timber do you intend to put an upper and lower one in?

I am going with just an upper one for now. It will be used on snowmobile trails only so I dont think I need a lower. I got the other track on today and was able to move it under its own power. (for the first time since I bought it):cool2:

I am sure they are bombadier. The 252 ran the small cleats the 301 and 302 ran the bigger cleats. I also bought some replacement cleats from Bombadier now Prinoth. They still use the same cleat on some of the new snowcats. Here is a pic of another 301 with these cleats

Welcome! You have done a nice job there with your machine!:cool2:

I have the SV 302. The cab, frame, torsion bars, and bogies all look the same; however, my track looks like the description Mtncrawler describes. I have a Ford 429 engine with a C-4 transmission. I would replace the big engine with something smaller but this engine has a brand new block and heads so, I am not sure what to do. I understand that the ski resort used this unit to transport a snow making machine bolted to its bed. At the same time it towed a diesel generator behind it! I guess that is the only reason for the large power plant.

What size engine do you have in your 302?

I am also planning a frame up restore this coming spring.

Where abouts are you located? Right now I am doing SAR in the White Mountains of NH until 1 February as a wilderness EMT.

Regards

Mine is a 300 six cyl. Mine is also a 301. I do have a 302 parts rig with a 429 and a 2 speed gear box behind the auto, and it still has the drop boxes in the rear. I do not know if this is the norm for a 302 or not. What does yours have? I am located in Farmington NH

No test runs as of yet, just got the last track on yesterday. I made the mistake of putting the ice pics on and after moving it in side my shop I realized I can not drive it across the pavement now. Atleast not with out tearing it up.

Jaybe -

I also have the two speed behind the transmission so it sounds the same. I am not sure if this is the norm also.

Are you using the 302 for parts? If so, would you be interested in selling the gauge panel? It is located in an overhead counsel right? Or, I would even be interested in the entire cab if you so choose to sell parts.

I am on the fence with this rig, it has been sitting for years. I put a booster pack on it the other day and with a little gas it fired right up. I told my self I would never do another one but now I dont know.

Let me know, again, I would be interested. Would you mind taking pictures of the overhead counsel in the 302? The counsel in my unit was stolen before I bought it. I am in the process of figuring out all the wiring, gauge placement, and switches.

Regards.

A couple of pics of the sv302 parts rig I just picked up. Believe it or not this is in better shape than my 301 was when I got it! A year later and more money than the little women cares to talk about and you have a groomer that you cant use because we have NO SNOW.

That looks really nice !!:applause:
We are having the same problem with lack of snow . My ranch has 24" in Idaho ,but here I am stuck in California :(

Well Its done! Except for the blade. Tomorrow it gets its first shake down run. I will need every one to say a prayer to the snow cat gods and have a couple of beers. Im taking the the blade off for this run, still have not gotten my cylenders yet.:letitsnow: :letitsnow:

What kind of material did you use on the cab interior? What did you use to adhere it to the cabin walls? Did you use any sound deadening material as an underlayment?

It is just carpet from home chepo, I used contact cement to put it in. I did put soud deading in engine compartment and it made it a lot quiter in the passenger compartment. I spent a lot of time replacing bolts and welding to make sure I didnt get any rattles. I also put rubber weather stipping on everything to seal it up.

Took the groomer on its maiden voyage, about 10 miles. All went very well except for almost no snow. We did have to stop and ajust the lights but that was it. Seems to have more than enough power to pull the 18 foot drag that is going be hind it. 2000 rpm in third gear seemed to be about 6 mph and that is a good grooming speed. I will put it back on the lift for one final check and then we hook the drag to it.:cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :cool2:
