My new toy!!!

Been wanting an atv for years now but never did get one. I picked this up the other day for something to use out at camp and for bird hunting in the fall. It's an '82 Honda 200atc. Runs like a champ. All the plastics are in near perfect shape. The tank developed a leak so I scrounged around and found another one in a couple hours on sunday. It has new rear tires. The price was right!!!:brows: Even-traded an old non-running snowmachine for it.

Already took my first spill on it out at camp. I was loading it onto a tilt deck 4x8 trailer when the trailer didn't tilt back when I climbed it. The brakes on this thing still need some work as only the front ones work marginally. The bike rolled back and flipped up the front end when it rolled all the way back to the ground. When it did that, it stayed pointing straight at the sky and I landed on my a$$ and hit my head on the ground. I'm ok though....my butt's all bruised and the neck is a bit stiff but otherwise ok. I still like it though. Something to play around with till I can afford to pick up something bigger.

Sweet find Groomer.
Be very careful with those , the front end has a bad habit of comming up and trying to kick you off.:w00t2: Build a box on the front for weight and be very careful when pulling anything with it.
They have caused more than a few broken backs in our area. Because of that I am not sure you can even get insurance.

I already have a box for the front rack. I plan on building a seat pad for the rear for my son to sit on and will be installing a gunrack for hunting. That, and fix the rear brakes. Looking forward to hunting season now with all those side roads I haven't gone to in years since they have all grown in.

A classic for sure. Congrats!

How old is your son? I have a couple handy tricks for the little ones. I do hope you have him wear a skid lid as those 3-wheelers can be unpredictable.

Yeah, I too will have to be a party pooper when it comes to ever taking a youngster for a ride on a 3 wheeler. I've ridden and raced almost anything you can imagine and I consider those things one of the most dangerous trail machines made. If you're by yourself and become well versed at hanging well off one side or another, it can be a fun challenge to keep the rubber side down. Even at slow speeds, if a youngster leans the wrong way just a little it could spell disaster.

I can ride one on the back two wheels as long as I want or on either side two wheels as long as I want and I seriously wouldn't consider taking any of my kids for a ride on one. Sorry for being the party pooper, but I've been on dozens of 3 wheelers for hundreds of hours and they flat out aren't stable. A child's safety is far too important. Again, sorry for the sour note, but I just wouldn't ever take a kid for a ride on one of those.

I have to agree with Dargo. Have seen too many kids injured with the 3 wheelers. There is a reason they don't make them anymore. Young fella rolled one and broke his arm when they were putting the gas line across my place 2 years ago. His boss got rid of the 2 he had and bought Kubota rtv's after riding in mine to haul him to the ambulance. It will be a fine personal vehicle for you but leave the boy behind.

I love the old Honda ATC's. I've had a 70, 110, 200, and 200 Big Red. The brakes are the worst. My brother and I did our best to wear out our little 70 and then 110.

My plan for this thing is simple putting along in first gear down side roads looking for birds and out at camp as a quick way to get to the outhouse in the morning...hehehe. I plan on eventually getting a 5-600cc atv or side by side but that won't happen this year until I'm done with the whole "Ditch the b....." process next summer. Don't get me wrong...I'm fully aware of the dangers with these things. It all boils down to the loose nut behind the wheel. I plan on take it very carefully when my son is on the back.

No worries about the "skid lid" I always wear one. He's got one too. My son is going to be 7 soon.

" and out at camp as a quick way to get to the outhouse in the morning...hehehe."
I can see it now. Morning headlines: Man crashes atv in mad dash for outhouse and sh*ts his pants!:yum::yum::yum::yum:

I have had several over the years on the farm. I really didn't think I had a 200 but decided to look in my files. Yep ,found my orginal stuff 1984 ATC200S. I don't think they went to the CDI ignition untill 1985. I wouldn't run the tires with so much air that they are hard. If run that way a heavy guy can bend the axle if ridden aggressively. Then you'll be looking for a parts bike. NO jumping ditches!

The thing is, like very piece of equipment, or your car, every thing has its limits. Exceed them and you're begging for trouble. I had a 200 Big Red and a 200X. Never dumped either one.

You'll soon learn the limits of your atv and you'll still like it, to be sure.

There's the rub. You don't know the limits of your ATV until after you've exceeded them (and hurt something). I know from experience... I just counted 16 bones I've broken in the past 10-12 years, just from ATV's.

Again, it all boils down to the loose nut behind the wheel and the person controling the throttle. I'm not what you would call an aggressive driver by any means. In 25 years of snowmobiling, I have not once rolled one.

Here's an update!!!

I've changed the gas tank on it since the old one was all rusted and had been patched already a few times. I've had it mainly out at camp running around making sure there are no bugs to work out before hunting season is here. The kids are having fun putting around in first gear on it.

So, I cut a thicker piece of foam I had in the garage and strapped in to the rear rack for my son to sit on. We headed out for our first real maiden voyage out in the bush yesterday down a bush road close to town. We covered roughly 5 miles in all on everything from bush roads, water crossings, down small side trails, up little hills, then up a bigger hill. The trike never missed a beat.

So today, I figured I spend a bit of time getting it ready for bird hunting in two weeks. I strapped an old milk crate to the front rack to hold the birds. Then I fabricated a gun rack out of a 2x6 and a 1x6 I had in the garage. I also had some bungie cargo nets kicking around from when I used to have a motorcycle. I put them to use holding down the front milk crate and rear foam and gun rack. So far....still only $5 in gas invested in it!!! Gotta love it!!!

I guess that little Honda trike is a lot bigger than it looks because you look like a little kid sitting on it. :whistling:

Glad to hear it's working well for you.

Now, tell me... Which is older? The ATV or that yellow helmet?

The yellow helmet...by far!!!

I used it when I was a kid. My dad used it when he was younger. I think he originally got it when he was a teen and he's 56 now so....

We 3 of them similar that have endured the test of time.

Ummm, Groomerdude... Helmets DO go bad over the years and effectively become worthless. Something about the plastic degrading (and I'm venturing a guess but think the foam inside has become flakes by now). If you whacked that helmet against a tree, it may shatter.

Any idea what size helmet's y'all wear? I might have some from this century that could help you out.

I didn't read back through the thread so not sure if this has been asked/answered before but have you considered a strap for the kids that keep them attached to you? (Works very nice for any riders that you have sitting in front of you). You don't need to hang on to them and wherever you go, including bailing out, they're coming with you...

No worries about the helmet. I just picked up a couple new ones the other day.

I've been looking around at some sort of strap that could attach him to me when we're riding. Haven't settled on anything practical yet.

Cheers Dude

Looks like your in for some real fun this fall. Grouse around here have been doing real well. I had a flock of 8 in the front yard last week.

One thing I would be cautious with on that 3 wheeler is steer away from beaver dams I wouldnt want a hungry beaver running up behind you and eat your "gun rack" and you ending up without your favorite shooting iron missing. The weather is changing fast here, leaves starting to change and the lake trout are on the bite.

Stay safe.
Nor.
