My new job

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Well I went and done it now . This summer my great nieghbor in Idaho brought up all his haying equipment from his ranch in the valley .He sold his old ranch to the Daughter and retired . He's like a Dad to me and my wife . Though we do not have a lot of hay fields here in Elk city the ones that do, produce very good quality hay .

He is 74 years old he loves to tinker with his hay and logging equipment . Anyway, I look out the front window and here he comes down the road in the JD Swather ,turns into my pasture and starts cutting hay . In about 20 minutes he has it all cut and rowed ! Thats about 3 arces in that field . Couple days later he is back and rolls the hay to even out the drying . Next day he is back with his Square bailer and starts spitting out bales . He also has a big JD round baler but it is too big for my use on the ranch .

Long story but I now have purchased his complete haying operation and have about 1/2 dozen big ranches to hay for next season . Its the only big haying operation for 70 miles so it should pay for itself quickly .I may have to build a bigger hay barn for all the hay we now produce .

And then it happened ........I left 70 bales of hay stacked up for the Elk to have this winter . Boy are they having a good time now . They actually sleep in the hay and refuse to leave .They pretty much destoryed it in a few weeks .

This got me to seriously thinking about something that has been on my mind for awhile .

My long term plan was and is to produce enough hay to feed the Elk through the winter that always stay in the area . Thats a couple of hundred head .

I am now in the process of buying the nieghboring ranch and removing all the cross fences to increase the size of the big meadow where the Elk stay and feed through the winter .

I am thinking of setting up Hay rides in my one horse open sliegh at Christmas and during the winter months to attract vistors and help the local economy .

The few local businesses that we have do a great business in the summer/ fall months but really struggle in the winter . Hopefully this will help .

I hope to build and design one of the largest Christmas Festivals west of Jackson Hole for our little town . So far everything seems to be coming together . My other neighboring ranch is already starting to develope a feeding /viewing area to help the animals survive the harsh winters .

I already have the sliegh so all that is left to do is develope a business plan and arrange overnight accomodations for the guest and tourist .

Heres a picture I took off the front deck of the ranch . There were a total of about 18 mother Elk and calves in this picture that morning . I have seen over 150 in the early morning hours .

I know a few of you have seen the sleigh but here is a picture for the new members to consider.

So whatta you Think ? Would you be willing to travel 100-150 miles to see a hundred plus Elk and take hay rides and sliegh rides amongst them . Maybe do a little Christmas Shopping, Find and cut your own Christmas tree off my ranch ,Cross Country ski,Ice skating , take rides in Snowcats and snowmobiles? Have big bon fires at night whiling sipping hot cider and cocoa and stay in cabins with down comforters on the bed .
I'm thinking of developing a weekend package for familys . I have set up 6 cabins so far that are all in the immediate area of my ranch . I also have one B&B ready to commit . The 2 local cafes are all for it .

Do you think this would help our little town ?

Impressive. That sounds awesome Al!!!!!!!!!
More pics as you can, Please!!! :D

Dang Al, you are driving me nuts with a post like this. I just sold all my haying equipment this summer to pacify the wife and doctors. In fact my family doctor bought my hay wagons in a swap for some of her cows that I finished to slaughter. I have been hurting bad with my shoulder the past 2 days and might actually go to her to get referred for a mri or whatnot. I thought you were going to take it easy! I love putting out feed for the game around here when it snows. Getting about 9 does and 2 young bucks coming in the afternoon for the past week since hunting is over. Good luck, hope you can keep up with it.

Well I have good help for the labor part . I got a couple of young fellas with more muscle than brains !:w00t2:I baby my shoulder all the time now .

Get the MRI as soon as possible . It will show exactly how bad the damage is . The xrays will not show that .

I just can't stand to be doing nothing .This is relaxing to me .If it can help the local economy better yet ! I would rather die working than sitting on my ass . My wife thinks I am nuts .

:applause:Sounds like a good idea though I think you would need a more reliable snowcat to make it work....:whistling:

:hide::hide:

Somehow ...someway .... I knew a smart ass comment would be coming when I posted that picture . Give me a break will ya ???? Thats about the only picture I have ever seen of a Kristi snowcat in the snow . And NO it was not Photoshopped ! I never said I got to the top of the ranch fast .....but that it got there .

Al i admire you....now you need to think on what else you can offer......Hot Drinks and food....a BBQ going maybe for the visitors....some play areas for the kids that visit....even maybe a shop....dont forget Postcards.....so much to do.

Could even set up a snowcat museum....now thats a thought.

Congrats Al and keep us informed and i will share all my crazy ideas.

Mrs Al i'm sorry for encouraging him....honest.

Wife got a big laugh outta that ! She nodded her head and said "Ain't that the turth "

I'm working on a idea to do a Bar-B-Que pit . I have always wanted to do a Pig and Beef Bar-B-que where you bury the meat under ground and cook it for many hours while I get snockered on my ass .
We do it in Panama with Banana leaves ,but there are no Banana leaves in Idaho . I have been told you can use paper grocey shopping bags and burlap and get the same result .

Since my area of Idaho has no Oak wood to use as a fire base, I am trying to figure something out that may work.

here we soak newspaper in water and wrap fish (trout salmon ect) in it then bake it.....the paper then pulls off and takes away the skin leaving the fish meat yum yum.

Any plans for the summer Al....like getting the local kids helping restore a Snowcat ready for the winter....and in the process teaching them the value of the land??

Hey Al, you need a backhoe next so you can dig the pit for the barbecue and hang a spear on it to handle round bales. I used to hang 2 spears on the front bucket and grab one with the hoe to bring 3 of them back to the barn.

I have a backhoe for my DK45 Kioti . I don't know what I would do without it .Man can never have too many toys !

Al, I think I need to take you aside and explain to you what the word "retirement" really means.

In all seriousness, if it'll make you happy, go for it. If others benefit from it too then that's all the better. It could be a whole lotta fun. Lots and lots of work but still a lot of fun. Besides you need another project. :wall: (Me taking cover)

Hey, I thought winter was supposed to be Panama time? Even you can't be in two places at once.

Hell, sounds like a lot of fun! You need help there for a few weeks at a time, let me know and I will see what my work schedule will be...

Seriously Al, I think it's a great idea!!! I've thought of doing something similar around here but too much red tape and not enough business(I suspect). But that's for where I live. It might work out great where you live though.

Well thats what I am hoping for . We are 54 miles up a road that basically dead ends at out little town . There are about 150 -200-+ residents in the winter . It gets slow and long through the winters . There are many winter sports that can be enjoyed in our area .
The biggest hurdle will be getting the people to drive that 54 miles. Once we get them to come , I am more than sure we can keep them entertained . Thats one reason I was thinking of a weekend type trip . They could spend a few days and enjoy what we have to offer .
The ice rink would be easy as all that will take is a flat area and a 2x12 board around the perimeter . Mother Nature will do the rest for us . We have about 3000 miles of ATV/Snowmoblie trails to choose from too . Snow mobiles are a way of transport around here in the winter . Very few cars .
I know I am retired , but I would turn this over to someone else when its up and running . As someone already said I do enjoy Panama in the winter .
We do have some other ranchers with hay wagons and slieghs that I am sure would jump in if this catches on .
It seems like someone would want to rent Snow mobiles if the insurance /libility could be worked out .
I have about 10,000 Christmas Trees that need to be thinned out on the ranch . We have another Christmas tree cutting area just up the road .

Many , many folks drive up on the weekend, just to get a free tree out of our area . I am hoping to get then to stay a little bit , spent some money on food and lodging and help the local enconomy out .

This just seems like it would work so easy to me . Maybe I am a dreamer ,but I look at something like this and my little mind starts working overtime to figure out all the details .

I guess I just don't know how to slow down ......

Maybe I should not even say anything about my new Chicken Producing Operation that will be operational in March when I return to my island home in Panama . Busy, busy busy .:dizzy::w00t::bonk:

Ain't as fast as I use to be, but you don't have anything I can't fix... um, machinery that is...:glare:

Won't be back on the ships and boats until spring if all goes well and Global Warming don't get here sooner!

Cool! Who made it? I am toying with the idea of building sleighs when I retire.

Good Lord! I have no idea . I guess there must be a build plate on it somewhere . Antique Sleighs in the U.S. are super expensive and can cost many ,many thousands of dollars . This one seemed like a great price to me at the time . We have had it about 4 years . I bought it from a Antique dealer in Canada and had it shipped to Idaho . What a Pain in the ass that was . You would think we were trying to import the new Terrorist Support Vehicle into the states at the time . It got held up at the border for 3 days !
It is a beauty and we love it . It will be pulled by a big black & White Draft horse . The wife has a set of sleigh bells from the 1800s that will be used with it .
For now it has been tucked away in the garage just waiting to be reborn and used again .
