My Kitty Amigo

My Main Coon cat, Amigo, was not feeling well the last couple of days. He was just not doing his normal routine. We kept a close eye on him and when he started breathing hard yesterday I took him to the emergency vet. One lung was completely filled with fluid and the other one was almost filled. They also saw nodules in his lungs which might be cancer. He was put on oxygen and they drained the fluid.

He's doing well so far today. The plan is to wean him off the oxygen and see how he does. They are thinking that I should be able to bring him home this afternoon. He'll be a lot happier here. Then we get to wait for the test results on the fluid that was in his lungs. If it is cancer there will be cells in the fluid.

At this time we're just taking it one step at a time. He's been part of the family for 14 years.

Oh my. Sorry to hear. Sounds like this trip the vet could run $2,000. Healthcare decisions with pets can be so heartbreaking, especially when the animal has been a part of the family for so many years.

Good luck. All the best.

The estimate was between just under $2,000 to $3,000. Makes me very happy that I talked Tom into buying pet insurance a couple of years ago. Thanks for your thoughts. Right now it is wait and see.

Last night I got a call from the emergency vet and then right after that a call from my regular vet. The cytology report had come in. No cancer cells. Instead there were bacteria in the fluid. Great news considering the alternative. Now I have to give him two kinds of antibiotic. Ever try to give a cat medicine?

Yes I have. My old girl is 23 years and I must give her medicine every day. If i have learned anything aboutcats, it is that onecannot reason with them about anything. But especialy medicine.

So sorry to hear Amigo is ill. As for the Vet bill, I am glad to hear it is not a conundrum decision for you. They are members of the family and precious friends.

The main thing for us was Amigo's welfare. If it was cancer then the question becomes is he in a lot of pain? What quality of life will he have? He is a good kitty and does not bit or claw. He squirms a lot and complains without a stop.

Amigo sounds like a charmer. I hope he has many more years in which to tease his subjects.

That's the story that I was thinking of when I asked if anyone had tried to medicate a cat. I have both pills and a liquid to give him.

Have more experience vetting cats than I want to admit. They are all different but giving pills is universal PITA!:hammer: Hope Amigo pulls through OK.

Leni, many years ago I had a Siamese cat. She picked up a flea. Being an unknowing new cat owner, I picked up a can of flea spray, yup, spray. My wife held the cat and I sprayed. The rest of the story is pretty much like the joke.

So, I went to the pet store and asked what they had for fleas. They offered me a piece and said " I have a spray, but, spraying a cat is not a good idea."

Hi Leni, so glad to hear it isn't cancer. Terrible when our pets get sick, I'm hoping for the best for you and Amigo.

They did an ultra aound on him today and found numerous small abcesses on the left side of his lung cavity. So tonight they are going to put a tube into the lung cavity and rinse it all out. Thank God it is not cancer or his heart. Expensive but it is worth it for the best cat I've ever had. I'll have to sell some of my stock but it is well worth it as long as he has a good quality of life. We should have another 5 to 6 years of life with him.

Any of you who have a loving companion animal will understand why I have done this.

leni, your're a great cat-Mom. may your fluffy pal be well- pets- they mean so much to us.

The saga continues. He will have exploratory surgery tomorrow morning. Without it his chances of survival are 10% or less. With surgery it is 50 to 60%.

Thanks Franc. It is going to be a really tough day tomorrow. I really do not care about the money. It's about quality of life for him. Doc said without the surgery his chances were less than 10%. With the surgery he has a 50% to 60% chance fo survival. He has already totally cativated them. The tec was so happy when I told her that I would pay for the surgery. Wherever I take him the staff just falls in love with him. Prayers for a cat please. He is such a sweetheart.

Sadly Amigo died last night. He took a turn for the worse around 10:00 and they called us at 1:00. We went to say goodby but he was unconscious. It's a very sad day for us.

So sorry for the loss Leni.
It is hard to say goodbye to them.

Take some time. I don't know that it helps but it is supposed to.

so sorry to here that I'm not much of a cat person but pets are all the same and are a part of our life's and family's it becomes real tough when you loose one my one regret is I was never able to say by to MacArthur before he passed on and I will not be able to bury him at camp he lived for his adventures in the back country. you are quite lucky you have closure .me I will have to wait till I get a chance to meet with him in the big dog park in the sky.

Thanks everyone. My husband is taking it very hard. This is the first pet he's ever really liked. Part of the problem is that they don't know what was wrong with him. They are going to do an autopsy because they had never seen a case like his.

As you can tell by may Forum name & avatar I'm really into cat's and this saddens me. I've been through it to many times and I am sorry for your loss. I know you did all you could for Amigo.

They called us today. His lungs were riddled with cancer. That was the original diagnosis but there were no cancer cells in the fluid in his lungs. We also got his ashes today. Beautiful box but it hit Tom really hard. The big tough guy almost broke down and cried several times today. He will not do it in front of me but I know how he feels.

Now instead of waiting for a year to get another kitty he is talking about a few weeks. That would be the best thing for us and for him. It will not be Amigo but the new one will be loved and cared for. He is thinking of one that looks like Amigo but I will try to steer him away from that. The new kitty needs to be loved what it is.
