M37 Dodge Project

Wishful thinking on the transfer case re seal. Turns out the idler shaft tapered roller bearings if preloaded to much or whatever , the shaft they ride on can spin in the case. Probably going to groove that shaft end for an o ring , for some tension , not sure yet. Seals are in , will have to repair some yokes with sleeves, and get some bearings ordered. J5 Bombardier

Just looked at my transfer case pic..... I clocked the cover for the countershaft pin wrong.....we fix... Timeline , I would like to have the drivetrain done, engine in by summer . Then it's body work on the box and front fenders , cab is pretty well ready for paint. I'm going to go with a canvas top on the cab , so I won't have to fix the steel roof. So I'm thinking ready for the road by , spring of 25......hopefully .

Thats pretty realistic being retired, I keep getting bogged down with work, its a double edged sword. I hope to get the Cummins complete by summer.

I better throw another year on that estimate as I usually have more than one project on the go at once . I still have my Bombardier SW48 to finish this winter/spring .
Being retired is good , but you don't get any holidays ............ J5 Bombardier

Transfer case installed .........had no where else to put it.
Same goes for the diff housings ,before paint have to repair a brake adjuster on the rear . Going to have to take a backing plate off a front axle on a donor truck. Take the adjuster off it and weld /fab it on the rear backing plate ,which in Dodges wisdom are riveted on the rear housing.

Rear diff housing and front backing plates got some paint this morning. Lucky the housing wasn't a foot longer , the paint booth would have been maxed out.

Tore the rear diff down , was sailing along until unbolting the crown , bolts looked to have stretched (locks were in place) . The case bolt holes are worn as are the bolts , so I'll tear the front down next and go get another diff out of a parts truck for another core.
As far as the triple bearing set up on the pinion , they should have beaten the designer /engineer with his drafting table as soon as he drew that idea up.

Still working on diffs ,stripped 4 to get 2 worthy candidates , took one rear out cause it was easy ,but all the rears all have stretched crown bolts. There 3/8 fine x chocolate ,will have to get 3/8 grade #8 and mill the heads.
Meanwhile the other one keeps on trucking........

Wow ! Nice plow truck !!

I'd trade my 2000 Ford diesel for that :)
I was eyeballing the steering wheel on it while plowing today , may swap it for my restoration one as a new NOS is 500 us . Already swapped a left front fender off it for my project , but I did put a pressure plate in it this fall , the linings were loose. Between a buddy owning it and me we figured the clutch has been in there over 40 years , and it has been worked hard .

Back from a week in Phoenix , trying to get back in the groove , so parted some bronze thrust washers and cleaned the cases yesterday.
Today I put NOS spider gear kits and the bronze side gear washers in the cases ( the originals were fiber ). I screwed the case halves together and pinned them , crowns are on , just need to mill the heads on the new grd 8 crown bolts .

My buddy was over today , we added a leaf all around , and pumped them up on the press. Left front was the worst , possibly the added weight of the spare tire carrier on the driver's door , but somebody had been dickin around with the front before. Leaving the center bolts long on the rear springs as they may have to go up or down once the body / box is finally on , to get the right stance. I have to make up some bronze bushings and get them painted next , a nice change from those Dodge diffs %%$$**&^ .

Had time yesterday afternoon to dismount 6 tires in order to blast the rims. It went good with my youngest , mostly broke the beads in the shop press and some good old tire hammering . Never fails , last one was a Bi__th , but it's done and I made sure to break out the Advil last night before lights out.

I've been in "Gimp" mode the last 4 weeks , drives me nuts when I have to get help to lift stuff , so the electric over head crane comes in handy . I finished the rear axle today , and it's on to the front one , I have almost all the parts to finish it.

Finally , just about done the axles , just have to put on the drums and paint the brake lines and knuckles .I had a set of Selectro freewheelin hubs from a donor truck , so they were installed , I want to get the axles under the frame and the wheels on , so I can work on the cab next . The pace was slow after a ruptured appendix in April and wood to split after that , but hopefully back on track .
