You might want to put the Chrysler flat head 6 back in. IIRC it is the 251 ci model. They used to have a V8 as an option as well. I think that was 318 ci. The flat heads have very good torque even just off idle. Makes them almost impossible to stall out. When I bought mine it would climb a slope I swear was 45 degrees with ease. And I found during carb rebuild that mine had a restricter plate. I haven't run it yet with restricter removed but it should be even more impressive. These engines are still widely used in industrial applications, installed new up into the 70's. It is also the same engine in the old Dodge powerwagon trucks. See here for parts. There is one thing to watch for, the carburettor may be Ball & Ball or Carter. The Carter rebuild kit doesn't exactly fit the Ball & Ball. At least that was my experience recently.Pixie:
Thank you for your reply. If you replace the Chrysler flathead in a j-5 with a Chevrolet straight six and a 5-speed, do you think one would you have to cut or bend the frame to get it in? I have never worked on one, so I have no idea.

You may want to replace the starter switch with a rubber covered water proof one, as used on tractors. I've had the original metal one ice up and get stuck in the on position... which is rough on the starter!
