Nice looking SW 48, spring in the cans have been covered in the restoration forum. Usually after all that work to get the can out I open them up to have a look, cutting about 2 in from the end opposite the rod. But if the rod has tension with the can fully retracted may be ok.

if jw series machine the tracks should be 13+" wide(crosslinks no longer available) hope no one put sw series track on it as they are 14.5" wide!

get local machine shop to cut out some, other parts(tempered bushings)needed can be got from lannord Equipment in quebec city
