I give this a lot of thought. Being in the job that I work in, I see many sad stories. Some kids I work with have been subject to abuse, starvation, born addicted to drugs and alcohol, and many other things. I have soo much to be thankful for. I make sure my own children know to be thankful for what they have. I teach them that no matter what, they have it pretty good when they could be like the 3 month old baby we found a few months ago left outside in a stroller at 11pm in a rainstorm while her mother was inside drinking.
For me personally, I thank god every day that I am alive. I have mentioned this before here. I was in a bad accident when I was 5 yrs old. I was riding my bike when a truck came into town going to fast. His brakes were barely working. The truck ran into me sending me flying off my bike. The initial impact broke my leg. When I hit my head on the curb I broke my jaw. I was also put into a coma for 3 weeks. When I awoke, it wasn't like all the shows on tv where the person just opens their eyes and starts talking. I suffered severe memory loss. Had to relearn how to walk and talk again. Spent most of my childhood in and out of hopitals going for one test then another etc. Physical therapy twice a week until I was 12.
Fast forward to 1994. I was riding my motorcycle on the highway when I slowed to turn in to our road. Had my signal light on and arm out indicating my intentions. There were two transports behind me. The second one in line pulled out to pass the first one as I slowed to turn left. I remember looking back briefly and seeing a mack truck coming at me at full speed as I slowed to turn in. His headlight hit my left handlebar hard enough to break his headlight. Next thing I know I'm sliding along the ground at about 40mph. I looked up and saw a transport trailer tire going right by my head as I slid along. One truck kept going straight while the other turned into the road I originally intended on turning into as I slid along the ground holding onto the bike for all I had. My only injury was a dislocated shoulder. It could have been much worse. They could have still been scraping me off the pavement.
So I take what has happened to me in my past to make me stronger and use it to allow me to help others less fortunate than me.
