If you looked down the existing sleeve, how far down is the 4x4? I'm thinking of a way of putting some leverage on it.
If you can drill through the stainless just above the 4x4 (on 2 sides, so you can slide a bolt all the way through), you could run that bolt through (2) 2x4's (one on each side of the stainless) have the 2x4's heavily offset to your advantage (like wheel barrel handles). Put a cinder block or something on the short end and lift on the long end. If you had 12' 2x4's and lifted with 10' of leverage, something is coming out...
