Heater for my workshop ~ questions about type of heater to use

the toyo's are about 1000 bucks but they just sip the fuel and will generaly run 15 years before they need any service wast oil heaters cost quite a bit more but fuel expences are 0 and heat is plentaful im actaly looking at a waste oil boiler to piggy back on my fuel oil system and with 300 gallons i could heat my house year around and the fuel oil system would be back up only.

Waste oil heaters work great if you have room for multiple tanks and can drain the crap off the bottom. Then use a secondary pump and at least 2 filters before it goes to the burner. Multi filters is the cheapest way to maintain any oil heat system. I had 17 years on the nozzle in my old farmhouse and half the oil i ran was waste oil and tank pump out slop. I got it for free and ran it through 3 tanks and then 3 filters before pumping it into my house tank. probably ran about 3500 gallons that way.

I have easy access to Natural Gas, its inexpensive here, and it allows me to have a thermostat set at a low temp to keep the garage above freezing.

Waste Oil Heaters work great, but require floor space for the oil tank and require me to manually fill the tank (and probably to haul in the oil too). I don't have enough equipment to generate enough waste oil so I'd have to find sources to get waste oil for my heater. It strikes me that for the amount of time required to get the oil, fill the tank, etc, for my specific application it would not be worth the effort given the availability of Natural Gas now that we have the utility running the line out to the new addition (at no charge).

i guess 1 advantage i have i collect it in 250 gallon totes it,s stored outside when the temp get's below freezing i just pump off with a gear pump works great here

OK, I just bought this one and told the contractor to install it when it arrives. I did not buy the vent kit yet. I don't know if he will want to vent out the side or through the roof; they offer different vent kits for each application.

Who makes "Mr. Heater"? This could be the same type of situation that burned me. I bought a chinese knockoff 40k btu heater from TSC that was not supported with parts or service. That is why, in my new shop, I put in the 42k "Hot Dawg" heater made by Modine. A high quality product that is supported.

I investigated this product pretty well before purchase, their reviews are overwhelmingly positive ..............

Work is progressing on the new workshop/garage/guesthouse and I found a thermostat for my new heater. Its made by ICM Controls and is designed specifically for garage applications where "freeze protection" is desired. The thermostat's effective range goes from 35Degrees (F) to 75 (F) which is exactly what I was looking for. Most of the thermostats seem to bottom out at about 60 degrees (F). For the garage I only want it maintained at about 45 (F) during the winter, that is warm enough that when I go in for short bits of work its moderately comfortable and nothing is frozen, but not so low that if I want to stay and work the furnace can't heat up the place so I can work without remaining bundled up in jackets/sweatshirts/gloves.

When it comes to freezing cold temperatures, you can relax knowing ICM's Frost Sentry is on guard. This low-cost, single-set point thermostat is perfect for areas requiring temporary or permanent freeze protection. This easy-to-operate garage thermostat allows you to maintain temperature to your garage/storage area. Attractive, extra-rugged, highly reliable and accurate, this thermostat will look and perform like new for years to come.

Its special foam backing improves accuracy by providing separation from the wall at installation, while sealing up any unsightly wiring holes. This insulated backing helps eliminate the risk of "wall effect" (wall temperature causing false temperature readings).

Ideal for storage areas, garage workshops, crawl spaces, warehouses and other critical areas where protection from extreme cold is essential.

Might get one of those for the new greenhouse. I like having backup heat in them. I currently use a torpedo with an old Sears 110 volt t-stat made just for them. Can't find them anymore.
