Gordon's ugly green ST4 wreck turned into a beautiful Snow Trac

Nice Job! A man after my own heart! Didn't your big wheels have reinforcing washers on them? I've never seen one without them. They were added to reduce cracking at the hubs. Some early models had only 5 lug wheels and if enough snow and ice got behind the wheel it punched the center right out. These early wheels had an alloy center and a steel rim rivited on. Next they went to all steel wheels which still had problems, then to the beefier 6 lug. Nice job on your grousers too!

I was digging through some photos that Gordon sent me and found one of his dashboard. Thought I would post it.

Gordon labeled each of his switches but it is hard to tell from the photo if those are plastic or metal and how they were made. It would be nice to see a sharper image of the dash, it would also be nice to get a close up shot. GORDON ARE YOU LISTENING???

Before & After photos!

Here is another photo from Gordon.

And I have a question about your GPS. Does your GPS cover OFF-ROAD conditions? I've been hunting for a new wide-screen GPS and noticed most of them are not suitable for off road use, some of them seem to have off-road capabilities and detail streams, ponds, ground contours and elevation changes, etc. Others seem to orient everything to the roads, and while they have streams and ponds, but really don't allow for off-road waypoints or show topography, etc.

Are you happy with the GPS you have? Which make/model is it?

one last thought delome mapping out of freeport maine make an antena and cd mapping system for under $125.00 that is great it turns your lap top into a huge screen gps. gives you back roads etc. speed travled etc.. I use it in my car shot the darn thing even talks to you.... as soon as i get a bracket for the laptop that will be in there as well....

question: i am looking for storage containers that look pretty cool to thought survival stuff and tools in ... after a short walk a week ago ... thought it might be best... but tupperware just detracts from the whole thing... any ideas , been searching ..... ebay..... grr

Gordon, thanks for posting the updated photos.

The Garmin Rhino units are pretty nifty units, I have a set of Uniden FRS/GMRS radios that do not have the mapping feature you have on your Garmin.

For my GPS I'm using a Magellan Meridian Color GPS and it shows topography and roads, but the screen is tiny and it has an upright format so it doesn't fit very well. Magellan is coming out with a new unit called a "Crossover GPS" that looks very much like your TomTom GPS, but has topographical maps and road maps. It operates in 2 modes, one for traffic directions and one for off road use. I'm thinking of getting one of those and figure I can use it in my Jeepster and my Snow Trac?

My daughter named our Snow Trac. Herbie.

Well I'm going to pass on taking a laptop for a ride in the Snow Trac just so I can figure out how lost I am :confused2:

But I do like the new breed of GPS systems. I looked at a NavMan and a few Garmin Nuvi units that all looked great for cars, but didn't have the offroad capabilities I was looking for.

I think the Garmin units might work, but the store I was shopping in didn't have a clerk who could answer my questions. Some of the Garmin units have the ability to take memory cards, but I am not sure if they will accept map suppliments. Garmin makes topographical maps for OTHER types of GPS and chartplotter units they make, I just don't know if those memory cards are compatible with their car GPS units.

bob , I have to say the video I obtained from you was very intersting... I am not sure if you noted the "alex Maclarty ltd." marker on my dash. your video provided a lot of history on the import of my vehicle and the how and whys.... thanks again.... I had all the markers restored as well...

Gordon, I also have the same "Alex Maclarty Ltd" marker on my dash, but that is because I also imported mine from England via Scotland too!

I use this system on my lap top in my service truck. what a system. When you get to know how to use it, it is a very powerful tool. Very Very hard to get lost or not find your way to a new location with this. By the way Gordon, your restoration is nothing short of amazing, and shows what a person can do with a machine with some sound planning and obvious skill. I hope I can restore my Imp with the same level of quality workmanship you used on this machine. Outstanding!!!
