I question why they killed the squirrel and the racoon. It was the citizen who broke the law, right?
They said they had to kill the squirrel to see if it had rabies. Not sure about the racoon.

I know that. My question was aimed at the law which, in this case, brought lethality to the victim.
They did not need to kill either the racoon or the squirrel. If this was about captivity of a free animal of the wild, 10 days quarantine and a release back into the wild would have sufficed. Seems the authorities were awful eager to make a point.
Which I believe is why this story has met with such popular attention
