Dam

Ok Murph ! I'm about to get ugly ! That dog loves you and you love it so get that gate set up . Whats a little sanding and paint or varnish for the best devoted love you will ever get ???:flowers:

You about to get ugly :hide: :poke:

hey your the one that said you wanted to help. I will PM you my address. Don't need to bring any of your tools you can borrow mine.

But hey I will get some type of fence up.

You need to block it with something that's moveable- duh.. obviously.
I had a doxie named Heidi.
She hated birds because she was scared of them, bluejays in particular because one used to dive bomb her from the top of a big oak tree.
My solution for keeping her off a freshly mopped and waxed floor was to lay a jay feather in the doorway.
We had a lot of them in our trees when we lived on the river in Defiance.
Is there anything Annie won't go near, or is a little wary of?

The only thing that I know of her being wary of is the heat register in the bathroom. She even got herself locked into the bathroom one time and wouldn't come out because she had to walk past the heat vent.

Can't put one of them in front of the steps.

Buy one of those spray products that is a dog repellent.
Put a sheet up blocking the stairs and keep it sprayed with it.
That's the only thing I can think of that may keep her from going near there, while the rest of the family can use the stairs.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to scream at her when she goes near it.
Then tell her she's a good girl and give her a treat and some lovin'.

Wow PG that is a great idea ! My wife use to do the same thing with a big ass whippin stick whenever I gave her the look :brows::brows:. I learned my lesson too.....

I could UPS my big ass cat that weighs about 20 pounds . The mean SOB will not back down from any dog . Hell she won't back down from me . I sleep on the couch most nights as I don't want to fight that mean SOB to the bedroom

There are a lot of really simple options Steve.
Don't give her access.. distraction and finding something repugnant is the key.

Murph,

Looks like you have a little room there. Why not make something that's soft to the spindles but leads into something more sturdy.

Let's say you took some Rhino-wrap and wrapped your spindles. Then use zip-ties to strap a 2x4 to that. You can then have a gate of most any kind. Velcro is also your friend.

Is making something fixed, but away from the top step an option? Looking at your picture, can you come out to the outside of the tubs to build something? I'm thinking of a 3-sided wall that you step over (but being out into the hall, you're not trying to step into the steps).

How about something like this. We had something similar for the kids and pets before and it worked great. You can separate the pieces so you can only have three pieces opened up to surround the entrance to the stairway. Just a though. It's allot easier and not drilling or modification required to the railings. Just fold it up when not needed.

Ok I am willing to fly in and get this built ..... but wait .... If you order now I can throw in a free set of Ginzu knives and double your order minus shipping and handling .
Operators are standing by ... Don't make me call PETA ! :w00t2:

Ok the fence idea is out. I slide a real heavy cardboard between the spindles. the cardboard is off a large commercial boiler and is 3/8" thick. The top of the spindles is over 4 feet so the card board is 4 feet tall. She jumped over it this morning. I am sure the other side where she landed was at least 6 or 7 feet.Thank God for a landing half way down or she would have rolled all the way down. My daughter was woken up from it and found Annie on the landing and when she saw my daughter she got up. Tonight she is in real pain and limping around again. Tonight and I will put the cardboard up again and take another one and lay it over the railings.:sad;

Just an update. Annie is basically a three legged dog. She pretty much lets her back right leg drag. She cannot walk on hardwood floors as her legs give out on her and she falls. She will take after a squirrel or rabbit but then stop right away. Hard coming home from work and not have her at the door waiting to knock me over.

She seems peaceful in the pics.

my dog macaurther is 12 years now he's been in several pics i'v posted and on yoou tube with the snow trac living oin bush alaska he has been a pretty free dog no leash laws and such when he makes his donation to the democratic party we can let it lay along side the road. He has never let any other family dogs run out in front of him it wasn't uncommon to have him run along side a quad 10 to 15 miles going to camp or out on the beach. Just lately though he can't keep up with the new pup coco puffs until two days ago when he saw a parka squril out in the open he out ran the little pup and the squril and caught some fresh dinner. That night i think he might have done the same thing ,i had to help him lay down and get up for the next 2 days .He is startig to get better but i can now see his time is short and when it happens my youngest Tim the tool man is going to be heart brooken because while i was deployed Macaurther played dad to him and tim is the only kid that dog has ever let ride him like a horse.

Working out in the front lawn tonight I noticed Annie for the most part was herself again. She favors the back leg some but she is back to running around like she used to. And yes the squirrels have to be careful again as she is chasing them. Hasn't caught one but is giving it her best. It is good to have her run to the door when I come home again. I just hope I can keep her from running to rip or tear her other ACL.

Murph,

Been down this road twice, we opted for the big $$$ both times. Both dogs ( Yellow Labs ) recovered and had 4-5 more years, although the days of chasing anything thing that runs are gone. Both dogs could walk, trot, pee and poop after the surgery. ( long term) I am sorry, no dog owner should have to go through this

RIP
my dear friend.

As I said in the my last post she had almost got back to normal. Couple days ago she didn't use her front leg at all and carried it around. WE took her into the Vet and her shoulder front left was completely deteriorated and her lungs were full of cancer. The two are related. This also goes along with the coughing/gagging spells she has been having. The Doctor told us she was in a lot of pain even though she didn't show it. He gave us some pain medicine that will last about a week. We wanted to bring her home for the whole family to see her one last time and for two neighbor kids who kind of adopted Annie after they lost there dog last winter. Annie would go over and stay with them every so often, even overnight Annie will be put down next week early like Monday or Tuesday.

Why Miranda Lambert's song "The House that Built Me" is going through my head I don't why. Not sure if I have an old live oak tree in the back tree line but we will bury Annie in that old tree line as she loved it back there.

She outlived all of her brother and sisters. He mother is still living.

I bet you didn’t know under that live oak, My favorite dog is buried in the yard

The loss of a beloved pet is hard, you have my sympathy ,hopefully they will greet us when it is our time, how cool would that be:wink:, all our past dogs greeting us with joyful exuberance and leading us along the way.:flowers:

Murph, this will be a hard weekend, knowing what lies ahead. Remember, when the time comes for the last "good-bye", you will be doing your friend a huge favor by not letting the suffer g go on. Our furry friends only want a few things out of life, one of which is a loving, caring family, and a peaceful end. You will have fulfilled your duty as her master by giving her the latter. Let tears flow, if they must, because many times, our dogs are better friends than our best human friends are.
I know this because I have walked in your shoes.
God speed, Annie, and to you and your family, and all who love her.
