Our Great Dane has been barking more the past few days. I thought it was deer, as we have lots of them around. This morning she goes into a barking fit, I go look to see what all the excitement is and see two huge coyotes strolling across the back part of our yard. Bailey is barking (from inside the house), but they take no mind of that and meander along. We've lived here 10 years and heard of coyotes but never seen one before.
My neighbor has 100 acres. He came over early December and said he was having trouble with the coyotes. He was warning us that he was going to be aggressively trapping them for the next two weeks, and to beware that the bait he was using will also attract dogs and cats. Not sure how successful his trapping was but I see he missed some, darnit.
Are coyotes in season anytime? Had I been ready my 30/30 would have taken out at least one of them....but I wasn't ready.

I just brought a new side arm for hiking in the woods around here . 45ACP Spingfield with 4 -13 round clips . I never travel without a sidearm in the woods here anymore .

If they really were as large as you think then they were likely coy-dogs, which is an altogether different animal-no pun intended. They tend to be larger, more aggressive, more pack oriented when hunting or attacking, and way less shy than your typical coyote. You're definitely right about not wanting your dog to tussle with them. We raise sheep so I tend to shoot them on sight when they're on our farm.
