California mountain madness, feb 16-19, 2023

Link to cam shown below at the base of China Peak resort. Pretty scarce right now but another storm rolling in as I write this. Still plenty of time to get more than enough snow for the gathering.

This is another one to keep an eye on.

Hello All,

Would any of you be interested in a get together in the Central Sierra's of California? More specifically China Peak/Huntington Lake area next winter. Sometime in February?

There is no way it will be near as cool as what Pontoon Princess puts together and is not meant in any way to detract from her event. I have received her blessing on this.

The trail system in our area would allow us to gather in one spot and have access to 50 plus miles of trails with elevation changes from 5,500 to 10,000 feet at the top of Kaiser Pass.

If this gets any traction I would start discussions with the usual suspects here to try to get something planned.
My ears are perked up.

Love the artwork!

Mrs. Blackfoot and I plan to be at CMM 2023. Do you know of other available lodging in the area? We have reservations, but snowcat buddy Scott doesn't, and I think he'd like to come.

It looks like Lakeshore currently has 5 rooms available during the event per their online booking. https://lakeshoreresort.com/

airbnb maybe? This vicinity will be the closest. Shaver Lake is also an option, about 20 min from gathering point. I will address that location soon as we have had some major snow and I plan to be up there this weekend to do some scouting around.

Have you tried Tamarack Sierra Lodge (559) 893-3244 and asked if they have any rooms available at their Shaver Lake property?

Scott, after much prodding, made a bunch of calls last night and found a room at a B&B, and booked that (Tamarack Sierra Lodge had nothing available at either location). However, he hasn't asked his SO about going, and doesn't know if she has the vacation days available, or if she doesn't, if he can get what was called a "kitchen pass" in the USAF. His booking is cancelable and fully refundable until 2/13.

Bottom line: We might be four, or three, but two for certain!

So far I show the following that plan on attending:

Group People Cats
TalleyHo 7 2
Pontoon Princess 1 1
Dan Thomas 2 1
Pointy Chops 2 1
Blackfoot Tucker 3 1
Cidertom 1 1
1boringguy 4 1

Total 20 8

I will update this list as I learn of changes.

Message or call me if you would like to have your permits fedex'd to you ahead of time. I can them out this week if you would like.

I will post staging area later this week, early next. We will be able to drop cats/trailers at one location and travel from there to different locations each day. Location is central to the area.

Plan so far:

Thurs 16th - Arrival / Open Day to Roam if you arrive early feel free to hit the trails. As long as you have your sno park pass you can park in them with your trailers.
Friday 17th - Kaiser Pass (3000' climb, base at 7000') up Kaiser Road to White Bark. Hosted Lunch on the trail. This will be a rather mild trail with opportunities for offshoots on snowmobile trails and open hill climb terrain.
Saturday 18th - Mushroom Rock, Big Creek Lookout, Grouse Creek. Hosted Lunch and Dinner. This will be a combo of mild trail and wide snowmobile trails with tight switchbacks and hill climbs.
Sunday 19th - Open Day / Return Home

Update with some locations and stuff.

My plan for permits (both for cats and parking) at this point is to have them at the Tamarack Sierra Lodge for those staying there. Others get ahold of me and we will figure out how to get them to you.

You will be able to drive cats from staging area to fuel.

The following are locations using Google Maps.
