Hello im new to this forum
Im not sure im at the right place. Anyways I bought a Bombardier sw48 1965 side walk cleaner works fine was only used at the church for 48 years never worked hard. It does need some maintenance
I would like to know can the hole upper top be separated from the tracks so I can bring it to body shop and get sanded down repainted again.
I don't have the machine at my home will arrive next Thursday day on flat bed
Also does anyone know were to get a parts manual maybe a copy of one
Of this particular model
Thank you

Welcome to this forum !

Congratulations on your new machine !

Yes, the whole cab and engine enclosure can be unbolted from the lower part. You will need to put connectors in the wiring harness. The lower part of the body ( the 'tub' ) is like the frame . You can take the tracks off the wheels and roll it around.

Manuals are available from Minnesota Outdoors.

Hi Pixie thanks for the reply
so its possible then great that the first thing I want to do just want to send it out the get re done. I live in CANADA would you know or a place were they sell parts for this unit im sure Illl fine some things wrong and will need to be replaced. look long and hard for this machine it has lots of power and torque. You say I can roll this on only tires they not the hard tires but the air tires.

Tha air tires are supposed to be run with 100 psi in them so they roll pretty easy.

The only place in Canada that I've gotten parts is at Dion-F4 in Quebec City. There are 1 or two other places that have parts but I haven't tried them. I got some things direct from whatever that division of Bombardier is called now.

Most of the engine parts are available at auto parts stores but you need to tell an older man there that you have a 1965 Dodge truck.

I hook them up and see if they have a parts manual I also want to change the track to summer track so I don't destroy my grounds on my land when I go up to feed the deer I have a food plot so getting the feed up there with this machine would be a big plus

Afternoon I still didn't get a reply on the manual does anyone else have a w48 and would like to share manual i would pay for a copy
im also looking for a complete history on this model what type engine all tat stuff

I'd be interested in manuals also. I found one place but they were over $100. I believe my SW48 has a Ford 300 cu. in engine and the ignition parts are just parts for a Ford truck with 300 cu inch. The carb appears to be unique, probably because its an industrial version of the engine and has a governor.

Hello again
How about a wiring diagram for the machine ive been sending emails to place were they have parts and stuff but no parts manual.
I have a doge engine in mine
To bad that they got rid of most of these records for these cool machines
I was on my land yesterday walking up the hill wondering will the sw48 be able to go up the hill or flip backwards its not steep ATV can make it up no problem sw48 wonder ?
But anything you guys may have to help me take the cab off to send to body shop and wiring and mechanical info would be a great help
Thanks

The wiring is very simple. Just the basics. I don't think there is very much "diagram" in the owners manual. You have battery, ignition coil, resistor, distributor, points, and spark plugs. Any diagram that pulls those items together will work along with some common sense.

The cab is bolted to the tub. Find all the bolts. Put connecters in each wire and color code them. Might need to detatch part of heater/defroster hose.

Last fall I took the cab off my Muskeg ( in avatar), checked differential and had it back on in an hour. SW48 is the same but smaller.

Thanks Pixie
Ill try that I don't want to break anything ill take pictures of it during process maybe you help me out in identify some parts I want to check the hole engine out and redo the wiring and get the cab redone for next season I have some time now but will be building new home soon on my land so time will be a factor
But Thanks

Yes, I'll be happy to help identify stuff.

You can send me Private Message ( top right corner) if you need to.

pixie
i notice that w48 doesn't have a choke i find that weird
thought model this old would have a choke on it maybe it does and I cant see it

I'm pretty sure there is supposed to be a choke.
There is no choke parts on the carb ?

The knob for it may be mounted in an odd place. My J5 has it by my left calf, Muskeg on back wall by left shoulder.

Do you have the machine, now ?

Hi Yep I have the machine now
Im going to keep looking. I also notice when i put my shovel up it comes down after a few hours any reason why the oil pressure doesn't hold the shovel up

Hi I think I found it look at attachments top left shoulder its tight but it came out OK I dint start machine its a Little early here
litle grey box is it for flashers it has left and right on it

Pictures

Yes, that should be the choke.

Little grey box I'm guessing is turn signals if it says left and right.

The blade won't stay up because your whole hydraulic system is probably over fifty years old ! The valves, seats and seals in any hydraulic system wear over time. I think staying up for a few hours is pretty good for something that old !!!!

Has it been used regularly until you bought it ? Are you going to need to do things like clean the fuel tank or put new points, distributor cap and plugs in it ?

It has been used for just the winter I try the choke but the engine will only idle when hot Im going to change the plugs points and the cap i want this machine to be in good shape it looks like its never been touch the bolts on the head are original most of it is looks like maybe the hoses have been changed so has the alternator.
I have to get the cab off I cant get it in my garage with it on.
it looks like more then just 4 bolts though but its raining out and i didn't really
get a good look at the rest of the machine shovel went down after about 1 hour .
Any pointers would be a great help im afraid to play with it don't want to mess it up either

I bought a replacement ignition system to eliminate the points. It was under $100. Looks like a quick install.

Mine has a manual choke also, with the choke knob about where yours is. I am surprised no automatic choke.

if you wanted an auto choke I would recommend an electronic choke as fords climatic choke system was kind of a POS. and always giving troubles. another thing that will make that thing purr when cold would be a athermostatic air filter housing where it would automatically draw air off the top of your exhaust manifold to prevent carb icing.

How about posting some example pictures guys im new to this thing though ave little experience in mechanics

Man the wiring for the gauges is there all solder to the gauges and starter i have to mark them all to be able to take of the cab. this is not going to be easy why would they have done it all in one lead like that pugs male to female would have been better and easier to take apart

Don and Donald; he has an older machine with a Chrysler 251. No auto chokes for those unless it's custom.

Ken, if you are hoping to work on the engine and be able to start it with the cab off, you will want to keep the dashboard with the tub. I can't see exactly how your dash is mounted... my plan for for that situation is to make 2 triangular pieces of plywood about 12-16" at the base with a piece of 2x3 or something sticking up straight from them. Then you need a 2x6 or whatever fits to go across between the two uprights that the dashboard can be mounted to. Screw all that together so it's easy to disassemble.

There will be bolts for the cab up at the skinny front end. There may also be bolts at the front outside of the cab and probably a couple along the back wall. You may need to take the seat out to find them.

you are right Pixie I see we had two different machines referenced .the one with the ford motor stuck in my head, because I knew that those were supposed to have flat head Chryslers. as you said there is no auto choke option or thermostatic air cleaner available for the flat head Chrysler .

The blade staying up for an hour and then dropping is fine . I would not even worry about that . Many new machines do worst than that .
Also it should climb that hill that the ATV goes up with ease . Most will go where ATV's fear to tread . All it takes is guts on you part . Just be careful and attack the hills straight up or straight down . No side hill stuff until you are very comfortable with your new machine and know its tilting limits side to side . :w00t2:
Welcome to the group !!!

Im going to have to cut the dash board plate out its welded to the cabin i dont think bombardier did this the other waoy would be to cut the wires and stuff like that as you can see the dash is welded to cab this cant be original
i cant even get to full pump if need be.

yep pixie thats what I have to do keep the dash with the tub.I dont see anything else I can do but to cut were it was welded and mount it with the tub I have to get ths thing in my garage some how. Im going to keep you all posted with pictures

That doesn't look like the original dash to me. Does anyone else have this model of SW48 that they could post a picture of ?
The levers are too close to it and there is too much space above and below the instrument dials.

Let us know how it's going, Ken

Yep thats what i think also im going to cut it and redo a new one that can be taken off when removing cab I also notice that the shat for the shifter is broken going to have to replace it have a look at the picture im pointing at the cracked piece. I also notice this lock type thing on the carb is it a anti theft thing look at the picture. Im starting to see things are were expected but as long as it can be repaired its all good.

the thing on the carb isn't anti theft it's the part of the velocity governor like you would find on an m-37. that one appears to be a different style though, it has a plate under they carb that closes when too much air is flowing through keeping you from over speeding the engine.
