Bob Barr on Marriage

Yup, a shameless political plug.

Bob Barr on: Marriage

The federal government should neither regulate personal relationships nor discriminate against individuals for their personal preferences. Laws regulating marriage should be left to the states, precisely where the Constitution places the issue.

Regardless of whether one supports or opposes same sex marriage, the decision to recognize such unions ought to be made by each state rather than imposed as a one-size-fits-all mandate by the federal government. Any federal laws that prevent states from determining their own standards for marriage should be repealed; the federal government should not define marriage, whether by statute or constitutional amendment.

In this way, every state would remain free to determine for its citizens the basis on which marriage would be recognized within its borders, and would not be forced to adopt a contrary determination legislated by another state.

Nearly right, NO GOVERNMENT should neither regulate personal relationships nor discriminate against individuals for their personal preferences.

So you are married in Alabama, but not in Georgia? Have to get remarried everytime you change states?

It would be the same as drivers licenses, I would think. Got a drivers license for every state you enter? I don't believe marriage should have any standing in govt anyway.

The main point he's making, since he's competing for a federal position (PotUS), is that the federal govt is expressly forbidden in the constitution from being involved in this issue. The 'conservative' members here believe the constitution should be modified to forbid, or at least not recognise, same sex marriage while the 'liberals' believe it should me modified to allow and recognise it.

Good one, I like to see someone is thinking rather than rhetoric

Apparently neither of you were, if you understand my responses above.

I looked again, but I seem to missing the 'rhetoric' you speak of, unless by that you mean it was persuasive. :thumb:

So it's ok to someone to marry six women, three men, and a penguin at the same time?

Hey, if you want to say that you're married to a tree frog, what do I care? 'Course the SPCA may get on your case.

If that's what they want to do.

So you're saying that the laws being created allowing two women or two men to marry one another are wrong, as marriage should not be regulated at all?

Then in that case, Vin, you can marry all the men and women who lack medical insurance, add them to your carrier's family coverage, and presto... health care problem is solved!

If your private health care provider decides to do so, that's up to you and them. I'd avoid using that provider as I think their premiums are probably going to be too high for me.

Remember, the U.S.Constitution is a document defining and limiting the power of govt, not of individuals and organizations. I can be just as prejudice, discriminating, and bigoted as I want. If I don't want to sell you my car because I think you're too skinny, and I tell you so, there isn't a damned thing you can do about it. :thumb: But there's no sense or money in it, so I won't.

Exactly! But if an individual or organization gets too much power, the federal government strips that power or takes it over from them.

Redneck and I voted early today. This is the vote we had to agree to disagree.
His argument is because the Bible says so. My argument is the government is shoving their Bible down our throat. Your religion is your choice in America. Maybe the term marriage should be changed to a legal union? Even a church wedding has to be made legal when all is said and done. Who you marry should not be for the Government or Bible to decide.
If it's about the Bible then why are Atheists getting married legally all the time?

Logically queers should be able to marry but I just want to kick their deformed asses up. I KNOW..... I KNOW...... that sounds bad. Something inside of me wants to. I think because I was raised with that mentality its seeded within.

Those queers you speak of should have every right to do whatever the hell they want to do Paul.
My baby sister was a lesbian. If she were still alive and had told me she and Gina were getting married, I would have been all for it.
Government shouldn't stick their noses in such matters.
I know I've said before that church and state should be intertwined when it comes to my belief as a Catholic, but when it comes to someone I loved dearly, and her beliefs were so not like mine (anymore at least).. I would have been all for her doing as she pleased and being in a union that made her so very happy while she was on this earth. :)

I was referring to when she was growing up in the family Bob, and she finally "came out" and announced she was gay.
She rejected all previous religious thoughts and teaching that she was raised with within our family.
My mother was devastated at first. I knew she was gay, she left the church and lost a lot of friends.
Surprisingly, Dad wasn't at all disturbed, but myself and my brother stood behind her the most during that time.

So something Jesus is against and hates, we should let it just be a normal thing in this Country?

WWJD Paul? How do YOU know Jesus would be against it if he were walking on the earth right now?
He was all about love and He still is.
If two gay people love one another and don't make a big fuss about it, who is anyone to say it's right or wrong? :(

I've got to go with PG on this. Abraham Lincoln once said the right of a man's fist ended where his neighbor's nose began. In other words, we are free to do anything which harms no one else. Personally, I find homosexuality repugnent which is why I don't engage in it. Others are free to do as they wish. It's none of my business.

I don't think Jesus "hated" anything.
"Jesus said, neither do I condemn. Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone"
I'm not usually one to throw the Bible at anyone, because I don't want it thrown at me. But if anyone is going to use Jesus to justify disdain, or hate towards mankind then be prepared to hear what he said. Notice I didn't say the Bible....There are too many contradictions from too many people that wrote books in the Bible with their own twist. Jesus was the same.

Christ had a reputation for hanging out with the wrong crowd. Tax collectors, lepers and prostitutes among others were his friends, and his message was relatively simple: Love one another.
:D

You missed it. Drivers licenses affect your right(or privlege) to drive a car, which affects only you. Marriage (the civilly binding contract affects child custody, real property, power of attorney, and inheritences.

Someone cant just DO anything they want ya know. It says in the Bible God abhoars the practice of being gay. God does NOT condone these things. Nor would he approve of gay marriage, since he doesnt approve of being gay. Its in the bible folks. You cant pick and choose things that make life more convienient. Either you take it 100% or not.
There are consequences for not following Gods Word even though He loves that person. Man, you folks would have HATED me when I was a Born Again Christian

Now... I dont give a shit WHAT gays do. I think they are born with a brain defect that makes them the way they are. Same as an alcoholic or gambler that addicted. So I say let the queers do whatever they want behind their doors. Get married, I dont care. Also, I feel that, as long as the Gov't doesnt pay for abortions, its up to the woman if they want to murder their own child legally. The Gov't will allow them the rope to hang themselves. its their choice.

You missed it. Currently, your eligibility to be married or have a drivers license is determined at the state level. Barr and the Liberatrian party says it should stay there and not become a federal issue.
