83% OF AMERICANS CANNOT AFFORD A NEW CAR.

Also, the $1200 in child care isn't permanant.

I'm not telling people how live as each siuation is different, but people need to look at one car, one parent staying home, some kind of sacrifice, hopefully with a bigger goal they are trying to reach (better job etc)
I absolutely agree. Now help convince others the value of modest family life. Good luck with that.

Now let's talk about the childcare ending..... :whistling:

Public school has costs and if mom works, there is still after school day car. Then comes High School and then the big hammer. College. And lately, with the help of our government's mandates on insurance, kids living at home in their 20's

True. It does help fit the new car payment into the budget. But that makes the final total at least 55% more than the original price. And extends the pain of a monthly payment to about the useful life of the vehicle. Thus one is caught in a never ending and always increasing trap of car payments.

I generally buy used. However, once in a while, the wife gets what she deserves. A set of brand new, high end, and virginal coach to drive.

I've always bought used. Never can pull the trigger on new, even if I could pay cash for it all. Too painful

I'm divorced, so don't have to worry about a midlife crisis of a partner.

We seldom buy new but we do drive the wheels off our cars. My daily driver is a '95 Dodge one ton diesel dually. My newest car is a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire.
Crumpy put 400K on a '99 minivan. Hopefully we can repeat than with her 2020 Pacifica

I've bought two cars brand new.

1976 Lincoln Mark IV, diamond fire black, black leather, polished aluminum wheels. Sold a long time ago. Miss that boat.

1997 Mercedes C280 sport. Still have it.

I have 10 cars now, other than the 1997, all bought used and cash. No car payments here.

I tend to keep my daily drivers until they are dead or about to die. In the winter I drive my 2003 ML350 with 240,000 mild on the clock and is rusty. No leaks, runs great, I plan on driving it winters until a fender falls off.

Why 10 cars?

I love toys.
5 are convertibles. 2 of those are 12 cylinder cars.
A couple of rare mercedes 190e 2.3 16v. Appreciating in value very nicely now, as are the 12 cylinder cars.
A collector of sorts. Not big money, but very nice toys.

Even that many..
We're working on scaling back but the wife and I each (so it's x2) traditionally had:
1 daily driver (Accord or Camry)
1 utility (Truck or van)
1 luxury (Audi, Mercedes, Lexus...)

I'm down to five. One thing with buying used, when they get really up in years and miles most, other than sentimental, have little value.
For me I never settled for less. I always bought cars I liked and drove the wheel off. Some of us tend to personalize our cars & trucks giving them life. With that much intimacy between myself and some of those vehicles, selling one off would be akin to putting down an old pet dog because he was becoming a maintenance problem and useless.

Boats are worse. I have far too many of those right now.

You forgot to mention that big group-set of crazies that spend 9 months fixing up old Cats so for three months they can play in deep snow.
