Orbitrol in. Few hoses hooked up. We found a new stock suction filter. The piece with the part number was threaded in the tank still. For ease and removing a few question going to put it back that way. Lasted 50 years so should be good. Now we know the filter part also.

Still eliminated one hose in the setup.

Thanks for all the mechanic work Brian.

New hydraulic pump, new filter, rebuilt cylinder, flushed orbitrol, tank and hoses. Few new nuts and bolts, few more things tightened up and we are ready for snow.

Glad we finally found the old filter part number and were able to go with the old suction filter setup. I know many prefer filtering on the returns but this worked for a lot of years and much cleaner.

For my own purposes of finding it again, here is the part# for the old Michigan Dynamics filter.


Ready to head north in about a week where the snow awaits. Can’t wait!

Congrats on the new Tucker. Teach him track safety early.

Tucker arrived safe. Put a mile of switch backs on and it ran and steered excellent ! Lot of water up here from the warm and rain. Ossipee Home of the Worlds first snowmobile has significant ice dams causing homes to flood.

Good news is we fixed the steering

Now the bad. The loose front table tie rid end we put the new castle not on sheared off below the table.

Tucker spending a few days in the field. All I can think is it was weak from being loose causing the failure.

Good news is we have a spare and should be a easy fix and good bonding experience.

It sure did stick in the ground like a pole vault. Felt like a rock at first. You can see the tie rod end broke right at the last thread.

Ground was real soft and we were going fairly slow.

Went back this am for another look. Bothered me all night. Was able to bush recover this am. Took a good 30-40 minutes of driving backwards and adjusting straps many many maneuvers.

Couldn’t leave it outside and had to know what failed and the fix. No Tucker left behind!

Strapped the front table to the rear hitch and used that to guide the front.

New tie rod is in the works...

ES2010L and R are the end part number. Thinking this kit for the upgrade. Sheet says 52 1/2”. Wonder if that is tube length or end length according to Tucker?

You guys did well to get it back in the barn. Im thinking Tucker or someone with mechanical ability should devise a holding strap on the forward end of the tie rods so when and if a tie rod end brakes they cannot fall all the way to the ground. I can imagine what those rods would look like digging in in 4th gear. my little 420 and 422 dont have those problems,just broken cables and that sort of stuff. Don

Rumormill down here in the anti sno cat state of Florida states a bush fix has been implemented and Tucker is back on the snow?

Yep, bush fix for sure but we are up and running. While the new beefy toe rod set up is on order. In the meantime, a 30 ton press straightened out the old one enough to be serviceable.

The rod was reinforced with angle iron which held up well but the ends where the tr ends thread in was not so strong and bent on both sides. Some cracks too. I’m sure the structural integrity is compromised but it held up for a few laps today.



ES2010R and ES2010L ends.
Build sheet says the front toe rod is 52 1/2”. But this one measures 49”. Maybe this was a replacement and could have been a little longer so the ends thread in further. I will measure again but seems to me 52” might work.

And I took Don’s wise advice and put a little safety catch chain on. At least if the front falls again, it won’t auger in.


Thanks for the remote help from Florida Brian. I sure could have used your welding skills though. Don’t make fun of the glob I put on that end split. I do think it helped stop the crack...maybe. I’ve welded about two things in my life. No idea...and damn near went blind doing it. But hey, were are running. Now just add snow.

Temporary inconvenience until Saturday when I return to the north. Rain washes away my snowmobile trip on the Canadian border. Had no good excuse for the wife to stay home so I am doing my penance.

Back to Tucker time. Glad I have the 442 to work on. No snow in Massachusetts. Over stocked on tracks under supplied on sno!

New tie rod parts are here. Beefy cost effective easy solution. One cut two welds done. Hoping for no clearance issues.

That 1443 needs to get back on track someday....

That is cheating. You need to single point right and left internal threads on your lathe. How are you going to keep the rod from walking, jam nut on the right hand threads? Don't over think it and secure both ends. Let the left hand threads move . Put LOTS of anti seize on both ends. Nice way to repair, glad to see it dun wright.

The inserts are threaded left and right with matching L and R ends. Jam nuts lock after adjust. You also end up with a wrench fitting to grab and adjust.

What I am trying to tell you is that when the cat is twisted up from end to end and the fifth wheels are in various different planes, tie rod ends do not have the full range of motion and can fracture at the fifth wheel. So I would leave one end not jam nutted. This is most common on the end of the cat with the fifth wheel with the tilt, which can be front or back depending on construction of the cat.

Ready for a ride north and test measure before cut on other end and final welding.

Spec sheet doesn’t match the length of tie rod on there. Seems shorter which I think is why so may threads are exposed.

Later buildsheets said “tube length” which Clyde said is what they do now with no tie rods. If they included tie rod taper center length it might be close?

The tie rod not welded yet will go on the table. We will bury the threads leaving some adjustment for the future and will remove nut per Scott’s reccomedation. Icing on the cake would be some NOS lead based antisieze which could be in the barn!
