6 volt gauges in Imps...why?

Just a probing question. Why are these 1404's equipped with a voltage regulator to operate the 6 volt gauges, or was that just par for the course back in the 70's? My gauges are all made by Actron (Bosch basically) and are all 6V. Driving me crazy as I need to replace the oil pressure sending unit which nowadays are all intended for 12V gauges. Even if I were to buy a new gauge/sender combination I would have to rewire it to a 12V source. Just making things difficult is all. I may just end up replacing the gauge with a mechanical one direct plumbed.
