Windows 8

Finally had to replace my 12-year old HP tower with a newfangled HP Pavilion, preloaded with Windows 8. Anyone else using 8, and how do you like it?

I browsed the thread from last Fall. Not much good to say about 8. Sucks in my mind, too.

Is the 8.1 update any better? HP support downloaded the recent 8.1 "Update 1" onto my machine when I called about another issue. Took nearly an hour from India, so there must be something to it. Anyone?

Keep in mind that I'm, how do you say, technically challenged.

To demonstrate how little I know, I went thru the same hour-long "Update #1" load, so I guess that I'm actually asking about the new and improved Windows 8. I miss XP, so I'm sure 8.1 #1 will be an amazing advancement.

The wife hates it . I am starting to get a better grip but pretty much agree with my wifes opinion .

Can an XP user up grade to Vista on an old machine? I don't think I want Windows 8. My machine is letting me know Microsoft is wanting me to go there.

You can do that Kirk. You can also still buy Windows 7, which is a much better bet than Vista. "If you like your XP, you can keep it". LOL (Sorry, I hadda do it)

The issue is this, the hacker community is "banking" XP hacks. Once Microsoft stops patching holes and issuing updates, these hacks will skyrocket in value. Anyone still using XP and doing any banking, financial things of any kind, or ,with files of personal value will then be fair game. Not to say that banks, etc. Will not stop letting XP users log on.

Windows 8 is what there is. Your alternative will be to go Mac and learn a new operating system or run Windows 8 and learn a new operating system. The support for Windows 7 starts winding down in 2015. Oh!! There is one other option, Linux. It's free and these days, not really a bad choice.

Hope this helps.

Here's my take after a few months of using 8.1 at home and still using 7 at work:

8.1 at home has been alright. I'm overall quite happy with it after figuring out how to run it. It's simple. It's basic without all the bells and whistles that normally clutter up a windows machine. Having said that, I still use 7 at work and prefer that system in the work place setting. I know a time will come though that they will eventually replace our workplace computers with newer 8 machines. I'll be better prepared to handle the change. I tend to embrace new technology though and enjoy the challenge of figuring out how the new systems work.

With all that said, I still stand by what I said in the other thread. Windows 8 runs way smoother and faster than my old computer with 7. The basic hardware on each system is very comparable. With 7, every week it seemed the system was bogged down doing countless updates. With 8.1, I think I can count on one hand the amount of updates that I've had and they've installed flawlessly the first time around.

Thanks, Windows 8. Unless I'm really missing something obvious, it appears that I'll also be replacing my old HP printer and also my not-so-old Intuit property management software, neither of which will run on Windows 8. That really, really sux.

Before replacing the software and printer you might consider saving your data on a portable hard drive, formatting the internal drive and then load win7 or xp ..or whatever flavor you prefer. (you might have to boot from dos or a Linux CD before you are allowed to format C: ...windows likes to protect you from yourself. :D)

note: ubuntu Linux has a free CD. You could allow it to load and format c: then windows would not mind at all overwritting that. But to often windows will not allow you to load a Windows OS that is older than the one you have current.

Kane, Doc, etc all - no need for all that trouble.

Go to https://www.virtualbox.org and download virtual box. You can put XP, Linux or whatever you like inside Win 8. Heck, there is even a port of Android, I have been playing with. It is safe as you can start with a fresh copy of the O/S every time. All your software that won't run on Win 8 can have whatever O/S you like.
