win 8 background processes problem

My laptop picked some thing that makes all kinds of ads popup on all websites, even NOAA. It's name is " safe surfer". Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them? I can see them in task manager but not sure if it will totally get rid of them by deleting them.
TIA,
Mike

Go to Microsoft's website and get Security essentials and run it. If that does not get rid of it try Malware bytes free edition.

Thanks, Mule. I'm running windows defender which is the win 8 version of security essentials and it isn't seeing it. I'll try the malware bites. I'm always leery of downloading anything not from Microsoft 'cause it might be worse than the present problem.

Did a little online search and found how to uninstall it. Still learning this win 8. I guess if it comes back I'll keep uninstalling it. Did reviews on malware bytes and it sounded like it could have problems also. What's been your experience w/ it Mule?

I've used Malwarebytes for years on several computers and have never encountered a problem.

If you have a problem getting rid of something and Malwarebytes doesn't take care of it, get a copy of Revo Uninstaller. That will remove the ones that normally give you a hard time.

BTW, cnet.com "used" to be a reputable place to get free programs like these. Lately, there's crap coming in with their downloads. You should try to get from the vendor itself.

Thanks, for the info, BC. I uninstalled "safer surf" and everything is running fast and smooth now. I guess if it reappears I'll uninstall it again.
