Why? (how about a name?)

Working with the local Humane Society come across alot of stray dogs and cats, all colors and sizes.

What I fail to understand is why someone would "dump off" a good looking dog who is house trained and good with other animals.

Pictures are of an unnamed "pet" so far. Gets along great with our other dogs, wants to be around people, and even knows some tricks.

I can't help but think that the family that had him didn't want him for some reason, but why just "dump him off?"

Wouldn't you think that someone would want him?

Have no doubts that after we take him to be nutored (sp?) and up to date on shots, he will go quickly at an adoption fair.

I just can't for the life of me understand why someone would just leave him on the side of a road "geussing" that someone would take him in (worst yet, fending for himself to find food".

Open to suggestions for a name as well.

That's a handsome dog.

He looks well fed and groomed. What makes you believe he was "dumped off?"

Animals can get separated from their families by accident.

Someone will want him.

Doug; Beautiful Husky! You did the the right thing for him. Good for you!:thumb:

Husky's have a bad habit, it's called running like hell whenever they get the chance. If one of those guys gets loose, he could wind up in the next county. I can't see anyone dumping a dog like that either. I'll bet he just got lost.
Most likely someone is looking for that guy. Maybe contact vets offices within a 50 mile radius. I'm NOT exagerating about the distance. Or even run an ad in lost and found. Did I see a collar on him by chance? There may be a little metal tag with some numbers on it, and possibly a vets office number.

Any way, if you wind up keeping him, you probably won't be disappointed. Husky's are wonderful dogs, smart, athetic, friendly, and a good family dog. They usually love attention and rough housing. His personality will come thru in about a month or so. I've had Husky's, they're great dogs.

How about Balto? He was the celebrated sled dog of the Nome vaccine run back in the 1920's?:tiphat::beer::beer:

He may have just gotten too big.
I know when I adopted Buddy I pondered that same question. Yes he was going to be huge, yes he decided at 5 months to chew things, but he grew into the best friend I could ever ask for

Dutch-NJ

My wife and I are in the process of looking for the owners. He was found outside by a "polling place" where my wife and I went to vote. We were told by numerous people that they had seen him there all day and people where feeding him as they came in and left. Locals at the firehouse at the polling place was did not reconize him nor knew who the owners could be.

You're correct, he looks like he was taken care of, but, he is underweight and looks like he hasn't eaten in a while.

No collar, no tags.

We know the local animal control officers personally and told them that we had "found" him hoping that the owners may call animal control for a lost dog.

We've also put up "found dog" signs with no response.

We will take him to the vet to be "checked out" in due time. He has not been nutored (sp?) yet, which will be a must if he stays with us.

You also have to know the area and mentality of some of the "locals" when it comes to dogs, how they (dogs) are treated, and what they do with them (dogs) when they "don't want them anymore".

I've also had experience with people calling in about lost dogs, and you would be surprised, to be blunt, of some of the "wackos" who call, have no idea what type of dog it is, no clue as to a name, but for some reason, want the dog.

johnday

Already he seems to be a great dog (although we've found that he likes to dig to get out of a fenced area and can "sneak" under the fence like I've never seen a dog do). Loving, great with us, gets along great with our dogs. Theres the issue. Already have three dogs of our own, and have two dogs in foster care already. Six dogs, two cats, four kittens. We will have to find him a home.

Balto it may be.

How about Togo? He was just as good a dog as Balto.

Anyway, I hope this guy gets better treatment than either Togo or Balto did.

Maybe someday I'll find the time to visit Alaska for the Iditarod Race.

Doug; Had to kinda chuckle at your critter count. In case you didn't know it, Jan and I basically run our own rescue society. Have four dogs now, and around 16 -18 cats, lost track ya know. Most have come to us, some we have just "gotten" in way or another. We just can't turn them away.
In many ways, I think I'd rather be with them opposed to many people I know!:tiphat::beer::beer:

Frank....old blue eyes :D

My huskie had to be put down 10 days ago. I had adopted her 4+ years ago from a family who didn't want her any more. They had mostly kept her tied out. She had never been indoors and had Lyme disease. Some people should not have pets.

Not at all Danny. We have the one dog, plus probably 10-15 cats. The dog and 6 cats are in the house, the other cats are out in the barn.

what a neat looking dog.. I like the name King for that type.. Send him to us and we'll keep him..

If I were not married and still kept up with my kayaking, I would, but then again, if I were not married, would not have my house and be a part of the humane society and come across this fellow (catch 22).

Had a very good friend who used to live in Kemmerer Wy. and would go up to Idaho to "boat with him".

My buddy now lives in Washington.

Make a deal, if we can't find his owners, and if we can't find him a home in a month (after all of his shots have been updated and he's "fixxed"), I'll cover all of his shots and getting nutored (sp?) and if the air fair is under $150, you pick up the airfare.

Wouldn't mind driving him out to you to see the country again, but with 3 dogs and 2 others in foster care, a kennel can get expensive.

My wife liked Balto, so Balto it is (at least for now).

Balto sounds like a good strong name.. I visited with my husband and he reminded me of a promise we made each other a few years ago. "no more dogs or cats" But I did sneak in Tippi, our cat. We have had some beautiful dogs too. Some that loved to run a little too much. I do hope his owners show up.

Happy to say just took Balto to his new home up in Boone, N.C.

Great family, little girl drew welcome signs for us so we would find thier house up a pretty sttep hill in the mountains of N.C. Have three other dogs, 2 older, Balto will the the Red Coon hounds "playmate" and they seem to get along great. Sad day for my wife and I, but sure a great new beginning for Balto.

Johnday, after doing some research and having Balto with us for a good amount of time, we consider ourselves lucky. Only issue Balto had was with cats, bad issues, but the only that one. Very laid back, played great with others, never ran to far away and always came back when you called him. Would want to ride with you up in the front seat of the car, wanted to be in your lap or laying at your side on the floor. Great dog. Both wife and I were amazed that it took us so long for someone to "find him", but considering it's up in the cooler part of the state of N.C, we figured things happen for a reason.

Doug, GREAT!! After loosing my "big girl", I was wondering about Balto. I'm sure you're going to miss him. Huskies are great dogs. My oldest daughter was over the other day, and brought along her new dog. It's a Husky/ChocolateLab mix. Looks more like a Lab, but has the temperment of both. I wonder if Balto had been around cats as a pup, if there would have been that problem.:burp::burp::tiphat:

John, perplexed how you got my name as "Doug". I've been call a select few other names, but never Doug!:D

Not sure about the cats, but the last one he chased up our chimney, was not fun trying to get her (the cat) out.

Yes, everytime we drop a dog off somehere, either my wife or I are in tears. Balto had been with us for about three months and has been a great dog, but is now with a great family who already loves him. Means room for one more now here to work with to find another home.

Well, I thought I saw somewhere a while back that you signed a post or something as Doug. I assumed that was your name, because you kept answering too!:pat::yum::yum: Sorry dz, how's that?:yum::yum::burp::tiphat:

John, it's Joe, apologies.

Ice queen, at this time, sorry to say, no.;) We still have two fosters we're trying to find homes for, and we have our sanity to deal with as well as our relationship with each other:D

Actually, four fosters, forgot about the two kittens living up in the bedroom.

We've had people mention horses, but we don't even want to think about that now.

Not to get on a soapbox, but god, if people who had animals that were allowed to roam, I just wish they would get them spayed or neutored (sp?).

DZ...... want to take my wife????? She has already been spayed....... Possibly you can find her a good home.... :hide:
