Why did Trump soften the GOP stance on Abortion

Pretty simple answer, in the graph below.

Personally I oppose abortion. I'm Catholic, I believe all life is sacred and that it begins at conception.

But I endorse what Trump is doing.

Not because I want a softened position on abortion, but rather because if radical democrats win then there will eventually be taxpayer funded abortions and federal laws guaranteeing access to abortions.

I look at abortion laws that way I look at what the Democrats did with gun laws. They nibble away. Little bits of progress over a period of years. So, from the practical standpoint, I have no problem supporting a state law that allows abortion up to 15 or 20 weeks. Because that can then be picked away to 'first trimester', which is 13 weeks. Etc

:agree: For VOTES.
Not sure if it will be enough to sway the numbers needed. The BS I'm seeing has me very concerned that he really might lose this election.

She wins Taiwan falls. China controls the world's micro chip industry. Philippines could fall and Japan will be in trouble. India will be OK short term as they have nukes. Australia will either step up their game tremendously in terms of defense or they could find themselves isolated. Israel will be forced to start throwing their nukes as a last ditch effort to survive. The USA starts it irreversible downward spiral into a communist third world shithole

Eventually, the court is packed and the filibuster is gone. Electoral College gone.

....and this is just the beginning. Are we having fun yet?? I sure as hell am glad I am old I can tell you that. Fuck the Dems.

If I were Trump I would refuse to touch the kryptonite that is the abortion issue. Simply stating that it has been decided by the supreme Court it is not an issue for the federal government. It is a state rights issue not
Governed under the constitution. I’ll be it I believe we have the right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I still wouldn’t touch it.

I didn't know he "softened" on the issue. Personally, he is against abortion on demand. Always has been.

Trump defends the SCOTUS for making it clear such matters are specifically in the province of the states. The federal Government has specific powers named in the Constitution. If not specified, then that power resides within the individual states. This is the actual point of the ruling by the SCOTUS on denying ROE V Wade.

Abortion is still legal in the USA. But, only in states that do not prohibit the procedure. If you want to kill your baby, go to a state that is okay with it.

Trump has said as much and no more. How is that a softening of his position?

I don't think Trump's personal position has changed.

I think he changed the GOP's formal position. He had it completely removed from the party platform!

I do not believe he changed his stance, he changed his view of it because after Roe v. Wade it is no longer a Federal issue but a state issue. As such, he sees no point in debating it any longer in a Federal election.

Makes sense to me and I buy it because I believe Trump more than any other candidate in my memory except Reagan.

Much of the public believe ROE V Wade was vacated and abortion on demand will be illegal in the USA. That is the spin from the left and the media. This misconception gives the left an edge on the subject, most especially if the right tries to ignore it.

I do not believe the media, and the Democrats, will let him ignore the subject.

Don’t ignore it use the pulpit to get the truth out , it is a states rights issue! Pin it on the states , giving power back to the people at the local level
Roe V Wade was bad law. We knew it back then and throughout the last 50 years. But the left has altered the argument to be a political one between the left and the mean, mean right. And a dividing spike between women and men. Pitting the constitutional conservatives against women's rights as the issue.

It was an issue of Constitutional enumeration of powers. I'm old enough to remember when this very topic was taught in our schools. Why? because it is far more important information for a self-governing population to know, than gender identity and alterations.

So, based on the recent ruling, any promises by Harris to federalize abortion on demand are false promises. But then false promises are what the left has run on, and won, for decades. This election cycle, we will see the worst examples of it.
