Where do my honey bee's live?

Honey bee's are everywhere today and I got to wondering where do they live? None of my neighbors have hives so the bee's must be living in a tree somewhere... but where? And how can I find it?

Doesn't seem logical to try to follow one home. Any ideas?

Bees can and do travel miles from the hive so pinpointing it is problematic.

The good news is they're straight-line flyers when they're ready to return to the hive. It'll be hard to follow one bee home but if you get hundreds or thousands in a flight path, you can follow them.

It's easiest when the leaves have fallen for visibility but this will get you in the right direction.

Put out a plate of sugar water. Once the bees find it, they'll let others know and you'll have a nice pattern in one direction where they're zooming in and out. This may take an hour or more. Follow that line. In rough terrain, a compass could be handy.

Don't make it very deep in the pan or they will drown. I put nice thin flat rocks in the 4" deep vortex tub we use for extra water for them. They most likely have a good hollow tree with a crack or a hole in it where they built their hive. You should get a couple hives and start raising some. I just got a second suit today so we can start pulling frames of honey tomorrow. Lots to learn this first year but we love honey and can't wait to try our own. I may work on building some more hives over the winter. Guy offered me some serious $ for comb honey the other day. He will take all I can get to him. I may spring for some of the round cake frames next year.

Bill - Did the bears get into your hive and tear your frames apart? It's been happening around here a lot in the last couple years. DEP, DCNR or one of those agencies pay the damages, once. After that, you're on your own. They refuse to relocate the bears. :(

Do you have any old outbuildings anywhere in the woods surrounding you?

We have an old shed in the corner of our property they have built their hives in the walls for years, it must insulate them from the winter weather cuz they are allways there when the next spring comes.

I have 4 strands of high tensile electric at 12 inch spacing around the bee yard. The steers keep a close eye on things as well. They will run a bear out of the pasture quick.

How about sewing thread and a slip knot? And some very gentle fingers...right ahead of the thorax with the thread...

Since y'all are sitting there having a knitting session with the bee, why not pour a cup of tea for each of you and then just ask the bee where the hive is? :)
